Shahid Afridi Criticizes Proposed Fines for T20 World Cup Exit
Afridi's Strong Opposition to Financial Penalties
Shahid Afridi, the former captain of Pakistan's cricket team, has expressed strong disapproval of the suggestion to impose a PKR 5 million fine on players following their premature exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. He labeled the idea as 'small-minded' and ineffective, questioning the rationale behind such financial sanctions.
During an appearance on Samaa TV, Afridi stated, 'This is a decision that lacks understanding. It reflects a narrow mindset. What will PKR 50 lakh achieve? In my opinion, this is not a punishment at all.' He proposed that a more effective approach would be to exclude certain players from the national team for a minimum of two years.
Need for Accountability and Player Management
Afridi also highlighted the importance of managing player workloads more effectively. He suggested that players in need of rest should be granted breaks to facilitate necessary changes within the team. He pointed out that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not yet released any official statement regarding the fines, which raises further questions about the validity of the reports.
Pakistan's journey in the tournament ended in disappointment as they failed to reach the semi-finals. Their losses against India and England, along with a match against New Zealand that was washed out, sealed their fate. Although they managed to secure a victory against Sri Lanka in their last Super Eight match, it was insufficient to keep their hopes alive.
Reports suggest that the PCB is contemplating financial penalties, with the figure of PKR 5 million per player being discussed.
