Sanju Samson's Stellar Century Leads CSK to Victory Over MI in IPL
Samson Shines with a Century
In a thrilling match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Sanju Samson's remarkable second century of the current Indian Premier League (IPL) propelled the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a formidable total of 207-6 against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday.
Samson showcased his batting prowess, scoring 101 runs off just 54 deliveries, featuring 10 boundaries and 6 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 187.04. This innings marked his fifth century in IPL history, placing him joint fourth on the all-time list alongside KL Rahul, trailing only Virat Kohli (8), Jos Buttler (7), and Chris Gayle (6). Notably, this was the first century by a CSK player against MI in IPL.
CSK's Aggressive Start
After winning the toss, MI opted to bowl first. CSK opened their innings with Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Powerplay was electrifying, with CSK racing to 73 runs within the first 6 overs, fully capitalizing on the fielding restrictions. This score stands as CSK's second-highest power-play total against MI in IPL history, only behind their 90/0 at the same venue in 2015.
MI Struggles with Wickets
Despite the early loss of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (22 off 14) in the 3rd over to Allah Ghazanfar, CSK maintained their scoring momentum. Sanju Samson and Sarfaraz Khan continued to attack MI's bowlers, effectively targeting both pace and spin. However, Mitchell Santner managed to dismiss Khan for 14 runs after conceding 2 boundaries, bringing Shivam Dube to the crease. Ghazanfar struck again, sending Dube back for just 5 runs in the 9th over.
Samson's Century and Final Flourish
Samson anchored the innings, reaching his fifty in just 26 balls, with Dewald Brevis contributing 21 runs before being dismissed by Ashwani Kumar in the 11th over. By the 15-over mark, CSK stood at 149-4. Samson aggressively targeted young seamer Krish Bhagat, scoring 15 runs off his first over. However, Jasprit Bumrah responded effectively, taking out Kartik Sharma for 18 runs off 19 balls, bringing Jamie Overton to bat. Overton began his innings with consecutive boundaries off Ashwani Kumar in the 18th over, but Kumar ultimately dismissed him on the last ball of the over for 15 runs. Bumrah's impressive 19th over, which allowed only 10 runs, concluded with figures of 1/31. Samson's explosive finish, scoring 16 runs in the final over, ensured CSK crossed the 200-run mark.
