Samson's Stellar Performance in the Final

Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has attributed his success in the T20 World Cup 2026 to the guidance of cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar. Samson delivered an outstanding performance in the final against New Zealand, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8.

He scored an impressive 89 runs off just 46 deliveries, hitting 8 sixes and 5 fours, achieving a strike rate of 193.48. This remarkable innings helped India set a formidable total of 255/5, which the bowlers defended effectively, dismissing New Zealand for 159 in 19 overs, resulting in a 96-run victory and securing the championship.

Consistent Contributions Throughout the Tournament

Throughout the tournament, Sanju Samson showcased his talent by scoring three consecutive fifties, including a standout 97* against the West Indies during the Super 8 stage at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, and another 89 in the semifinal against England at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Guidance from a Legend

Samson was named Player of the Tournament for his exceptional contributions, which included three match-winning fifties. In the post-match presentation, he shared that he had been in regular contact with Sachin Tendulkar over the past few months. He emphasized that their 'big conversations' significantly influenced his mindset and game strategy, with Tendulkar even checking in on him before the final.

"I have been in constant touch with Sachin Tendulkar sir. When I was not playing in Australia, I reflected on the mindset I needed. I reached out to him for guidance, and he called me yesterday to see how I was feeling. What more could I ask for?" Samson expressed.

A Journey of Resilience

Initially, Samson was not included in the playing XI as the management opted for Ishan Kishan to open alongside Abhishek Sharma. However, an illness to Sharma opened the door for Samson's World Cup debut against Namibia, where he scored 22 runs off 8 balls, followed by a quick 24 off 15 balls against Zimbabwe in the Super 8 stage.

Having been part of the 2024 World Cup-winning squad without playing a match, Samson described his journey as a dream realized. He noted, "It all began one to two years ago when I was with the 2024 World Cup-winning team in the West Indies. I visualized my success and worked hard for it. After the New Zealand series, I felt shattered, but I learned that God had different plans for me. I was rewarded for daring to dream, and many former players supported me along the way."

Record-Breaking Performance

In the T20 World Cup 2026, Sanju Samson emerged as the highest run-scorer for India, accumulating 321 runs at an average of 80.25 and a striking rate of 199.37, including three fifties. He surpassed Virat Kohli's record for the most runs by an Indian in T20 World Cup history, solidifying his legacy as one of India's premier T20 players.
