Sanjay Manjrekar Advocates for Overseas Captains in IPL
Manjrekar's Perspective on IPL Leadership
Sanjay Manjrekar, a former cricketer and current commentator, has voiced his opinion that IPL franchises should consider appointing overseas players as captains. In the latest IPL season, only Pat Cummins served as an overseas captain, leading the Sunrisers Hyderabad to the playoffs.
The other nine teams were helmed by Indian captains, with six of them, including Hardik Pandya, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rishabh Pant, Ajinkya Rahane, Axar Patel, and Shreyas Iyer, unable to secure playoff spots. Ishan Kishan initially captained SRH before Cummins returned from injury to reclaim his leadership role.
Successful Leadership in IPL 2026
Rajat Patidar and Shubman Gill guided the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2026 final, respectively. RCB successfully defended their title, clinching victory in a thrilling match under Patidar's captaincy, which marked their first championship win.

Manjrekar's Philosophy on Captaincy
Manjrekar, known for his candid analysis, stressed that franchises should prioritize tactical skills and leadership effectiveness over the commercial appeal of having a local captain. He noted, "Many Indian captains have struggled, including players like Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant," during a discussion on the Sportstar Podcast.
"In T20 cricket, the best captain should be chosen, regardless of nationality. If that captain is a foreign player, then so be it. Successful captains like David Warner and Pat Cummins exemplify this approach," he added.
Historical Context of IPL Captains
Over the past 19 seasons, only three overseas captains—Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, and David Warner—have led their teams to IPL titles, while Indian captains like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Hardik Pandya, and Rajat Patidar have also achieved success.
Manjrekar's insights highlight the importance of seeking the best leadership, even if it means looking beyond national borders in the competitive landscape of T20 cricket.
The Rationale Behind Indian Captains
Manjrekar elaborated on why franchises often choose Indian players as captains, citing a significant non-cricketing motivation. He explained that an Indian captain serves as the face of the franchise, enhancing its brand value and marketability.
"Franchises must weigh what benefits their brand against what leads to winning titles. Ideally, the captain should be a strong leader, regardless of their nationality," he remarked.
Prominent figures like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli have set a benchmark for captaincy that has significantly contributed to brand equity in the IPL, helping their respective franchises cultivate a large fanbase.
Rajat Patidar has now joined the ranks of Dhoni and Rohit as one of the few captains to secure back-to-back IPL titles.
