Sam Konstas Channels Tamil Nadu CM Vijay's Iconic Pose During ODI Series
Sam Konstas Recreates Vijay's Signature Gesture
Australian cricketer Sam Konstas paid homage to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay by mimicking his famous pose during the second unofficial ODI match between Australia A and India A at CAP Siechem Ground in Puducherry on October 9.
Australia A clinched the three-match unofficial ODI series with a decisive 169-run victory over India A. After scoring 275 runs in 49.5 overs, bolstered by fifties from Sam Konstas (67) and Josh Phillipe (58), along with contributions from Nathan McSweeney (32), Lachlan Shaw (25), and Spencer Johnson (14*), the Australian team bowled out India A for 206 in 45.2 overs.
The bowling attack was spearheaded by Spencer Johnson, who took 3 wickets for 35 runs and was named Player of the Match. Other notable performances came from Riley Meredith (2/31), Tanveer Sangha (2/42), Ben Dwarshuis (1/34), Nikhil Choudhary (1/23), and Mitchell Owen (1/12), ensuring a comprehensive win for the visitors.
Viral Moment: Konstas Acknowledges Local Fans
As Australia A celebrated their series victory, Sam Konstas quickly became a crowd favorite, receiving enthusiastic cheers from the local audience in Puducherry. The atmosphere was electric as he acknowledged the fans with flair.
During the match, fans of actor-turned-politician Vijay cheered loudly when Konstas performed the iconic gesture associated with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. A video capturing this moment went viral on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter).
In the clip, while fielding near the boundary, Konstas responded to the crowd's request by executing the hand-slashing gesture, which drew an uproar of applause from the spectators.
The Significance of Vijay's Gesture
Vijay's hand-slashing gesture gained prominence in Tamil Nadu politics in June 2026, when he used it to critique the DMK. This gesture was a nod to a similar one made by his predecessor, M. K. Stalin, and sparked considerable discussion in political circles.
This iconic pose was also featured in Vijay's last film, 'Jana Nayagan', where it was immortalized in the opening sequence, merging his cinematic legacy with his political journey.
Sam Konstas' Performance in the Series
Sam Konstas was selected for Australia A's squad to provide emerging talents with exposure to subcontinental conditions, as part of Cricket Australia's strategy.
After being absent from the national team since his last Test against the West Indies in July of the previous year, Konstas aimed to regain his form during this tour. In the two unofficial Tests against India A, he scored 25, 20, 2, and 40 across four innings.
In the first unofficial ODI, he managed 14 runs off 12 balls. However, he made a significant comeback in the second ODI, scoring 67 runs off 88 balls, including seven fours and a six, which was pivotal in securing the series victory for Australia A.
With Australia preparing for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in India next January, Konstas is eager to make a strong case for his selection by performing well in these conditions.
