Sahith Theegala delivered an outstanding performance at the Wyndham Championship, finishing with an impressive score of 8-under 62 at Sedgefield Country Club. He ended the day just one stroke behind Beau Hossler, who led the field with a remarkable 9-under 61 on a day filled with low scores.

Birdies Galore

Theegala achieved nine birdies during his round, with eight of them coming on the front nine. This tournament marks the final event of the regular season, which determines the top 70 players who will advance to the FedExCup Playoffs. Currently ranked 43rd, Theegala is assured a spot in the playoffs. Aaron Rai, the only other player of Indian descent in the tournament, finished with a score of 1-under 69 after starting on the back nine. Rai managed four birdies on the more favorable front nine but faced challenges with a bogey and a double bogey on his second nine.

A Strong Start

Theegala kicked off his round with an impressive streak, recording six consecutive birdies before dropping a shot. He then added birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, finishing the front nine with a score of 7-under 28. On the back nine, he parred eight holes in a row from the 10th to the 17th, concluding with a birdie for a total score of 62.

Contenders Battle for Lead

Ben James also made a strong showing, scoring eagles on both par 5s at Sedgefield Country Club. However, a couple of bogeys towards the end of his round prevented him from sharing the lead with Hossler. James, ranked No. 1 in the 2026 PGA TOUR University standings, needs a win to secure a place in the top 70. He finished with a score of 62, having tied for second with Theegala.

Hossler, currently ranked No. 122 in the FedExCup standings, also requires a win to qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Championship next week. He started strong with four consecutive birdies on his front nine and finished the round with a 30-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th.

Theegala Reflects on His Round

Describing his round as 'pretty wild,' Theegala noted that he didn't make a single par on the front nine. He expressed surprise at his strong start, stating, 'I've never had a round like that. Historically, I've struggled to start rounds well, so this was the first time I began with six birdies in a row. It felt incredible.' However, he acknowledged that his performance on the back nine suffered due to missed fairways, which limited his scoring opportunities.

The Fight for the FedExCup Playoffs

Eric Cole shot a score of 63, placing him in fourth, while six players finished with a score of 64, including five who are currently outside the top 70 in the FedExCup standings. The exception is Matti Schmid, who is ranked No. 67 and is not yet secure in his playoff position.

Brooks Koepka, returning to the PGA TOUR after a stint with LIV Golf, needed a strong finish to qualify for the postseason but settled for a score of 67, which was closer to the cut line than the lead on a course that saw 36 rounds of 66 or lower.
