Roman Reigns to Defend World Heavyweight Championship Against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam 2026
Main Event Announcement for SummerSlam 2026
At SummerSlam 2026, Roman Reigns will defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins. This matchup was confirmed when Reigns accepted Rollins' challenge during this week's episode of Raw. Rollins, a former champion, had to vacate the title due to an injury and is now determined to reclaim it. Meanwhile, Reigns aims to extend his championship reign. Rollins is scheduled to appear on next week's Raw to address the WWE Universe, while Reigns will not be present.
Reigns is set to make only two more appearances leading up to the highly anticipated SummerSlam event. His next appearance will be on the July 13th episode of Raw, after which he will miss the July 20th show and return for the final Raw before SummerSlam on July 27th. The main event on the second night of SummerSlam will feature the clash between Reigns and Rollins.
Since 2022, Reigns has been working under a part-time WWE contract, resulting in limited appearances and matches. After taking an extended break following WrestleMania 40, he made his return at SummerSlam.
Roman Reigns' Championship Journey
Reigns first captured the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42, having earned his title shot by winning the Royal Rumble 2026. He faced CM Punk in the main event of the second night, where he secured the championship for the first time. Notably, this title was introduced after Reigns transitioned to a part-time schedule. Prior to this, he held both the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship while under a part-time contract. Due to the absence of a top champion for much of 2022-23, WWE decided to introduce the World Heavyweight Championship. Seth Rollins became the inaugural champion after defeating AJ Styles at Night of Champions 2023, but his reign ended at WrestleMania 40 when he lost to Drew McIntyre.
