Rohit Sharma made a significant impact in the third ODI against South Africa, scoring a brilliant 75 runs and crossing the milestone of 20,000 international runs. His performance has reignited discussions about his role in India's plans for the upcoming 2027 World Cup. With a focus on ODIs after retiring from Tests and T20Is, Sharma aims to maintain his form and fitness, participating in domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This article explores his recent achievements and future prospects in international cricket.

Rohit Sharma's Stellar Performance

Former Indian captain and renowned batsman Rohit Sharma showcased his exceptional skills with a remarkable half-century during the third and final ODI against South Africa at the Dr YS Rajashekhara Reddy Stadium in Vishakhapatnam on December 7.

Choosing to bowl first, skipper KL Rahul led Team India to restrict South Africa to 270 runs in this decisive match, leveling the series at 1-1 after the Proteas claimed victory in the second ODI held in Raipur. In pursuit of the 271-run target, the Indian opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma provided a strong start, with Rohit's elegant stroke play setting a confident tone for the chase.

Dominant Opening Partnership

The opening pair frustrated the South African bowlers with a commanding 155-run partnership before Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj. The seasoned Indian batsman scored an impressive 75 runs off 73 balls, featuring seven fours and three sixes.

Rohit Sharma's Form Remains Strong

Since returning to international cricket during the ODI series against Australia in October, Rohit Sharma has displayed remarkable form. After stepping back from Test and T20 formats, he is now focusing solely on ODIs, aiming to extend his career until the 2027 World Cup, which may mark his farewell.

In the Australia ODI series, Rohit accumulated 202 runs, including a century and a fifty, averaging 101.1 across three matches. In the home series against South Africa, he scored 146 runs, with two fifties, averaging 48.67 in three matches. Overall, he has amassed 347 runs at an impressive average of 69.4 across both series.

Milestone Achieved

Rohit Sharma's 75-run innings not only contributed significantly to India's chase but also marked a personal milestone as he crossed 20,000 international runs. He became the fourth Indian player to achieve this feat, following legends Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rahul Dravid.

Future Prospects for Rohit Sharma

Following his stellar performance, discussions have reignited regarding Rohit Sharma's place in India's plans for the 2027 World Cup. The selectors and management are closely monitoring his form, fitness, and consistency to assess his role in the ODI setup leading up to the World Cup.

While Rohit has not officially declared his availability for the World Cup, his recent performances indicate that he remains a key player for India as they prepare for the tournament.

Participation in Vijay Hazare Trophy

To further evaluate his fitness and form, Rohit Sharma is set to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has reportedly informed the Mumbai Cricket Association of his availability for the domestic 50-over tournament starting on December 24, in line with BCCI guidelines requiring contracted players to participate in domestic cricket for national selection.

Despite retiring from T20Is last year, Rohit is expected to play for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy knockouts. He will head to Pune after the third ODI to join his team, ensuring he remains match-fit for the 2027 World Cup.

Before heading to Pune, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are anticipated to meet with BCCI officials, including selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir, to discuss their future, particularly concerning the 2027 World Cup.
