Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the brand ambassador for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in 2024, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. This announcement was made by ICC President Jay Shah during an event in Mumbai on November 25. Rohit, who won his first T20 World Cup in 2007 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, has participated in every edition of the tournament since then. In 2024, he led India to victory over South Africa at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, marking his first ICC trophy as captain.
Rohit's Reaction to the Appointment
Expressing his gratitude after being named brand ambassador, Rohit stated that he feels honored to be the first Indian cricketer to hold this title. He thanked the ICC and Jay Shah, emphasizing that being an ambassador for an ICC event is a significant honor. Rohit noted that no active player has previously been appointed as an ICC ambassador, making this recognition even more special for him.
Announcement of the T20 World Cup 2026 Schedule
On the same day, the International Cricket Council revealed the schedule for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The tournament will kick off on February 7, with the final match scheduled for March 8. India has been placed in a group alongside Pakistan, the USA, Namibia, and the Netherlands. The highly anticipated match against Pakistan will take place on February 15 in Colombo, marking their first encounter after three matches in the Asia Cup.
India's Match Schedule
The defending champions will begin their campaign against the USA on February 7 in Mumbai, followed by a match against Namibia in Delhi on February 12. The clash with Pakistan is set for February 15 in Colombo, after which Rohit Sharma's team will complete the group stage against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on February 18. According to the ICC's group announcement, India, Pakistan, Namibia, the USA, and the Netherlands are all in the same group, while Bangladesh, Italy, England, Nepal, and the West Indies form another group. Australia, Ireland, Oman, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe are in a separate group, and the final group includes Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UAE.
Tournament Venues
The tournament will be hosted at five venues in India: Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In Sri Lanka, three venues will host the event, including R. Premadasa Stadium and Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, as well as Pallekele Stadium in Kandy. A total of 20 teams will compete for the prestigious trophy, divided into four groups of five teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Eight stage, leading to the semifinals and finals.
