Rohit Sharma Announces Test Retirement, Shifts Focus to IPL 2025
Rohit Sharma's Retirement from Test Cricket
Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, has officially declared his retirement from Test cricket, a decision that has left fans across the nation in disappointment. The right-handed opener shared this news on Instagram, marking the end of his Test career after participating in 67 matches and accumulating 4,301 runs.
This announcement comes shortly before Virat Kohli's own retirement from Test cricket, as both players step back ahead of India's upcoming five-match series against England.
Despite Rohit's recent performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and the home series against New Zealand not meeting expectations, his role as a reliable opener over the years has been invaluable across all formats.
Achievements and Critiques
Rohit has successfully led India to two ICC trophies and reached the final of the 2023 World Cup, in addition to captaining the team during the recent WTC Final.
Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali shared his thoughts on Rohit's career during an episode of the Beard Before Wicket podcast. He commended Rohit's innate talent and graceful batting style but pointed out that Rohit’s fitness regimen did not match the rigorous standards set by Kohli.
“Rohit was a more natural player in terms of, like, amazing to watch. Like a proper gift given to him. When I say natural, everything looks a lot smoother. He was a top player. There was a period of time where he was probably the most talented player in the world, naturally,” Moeen remarked.
Moeen also noted that while Rohit may not have prioritized fitness like Kohli, he still managed to excel in hitting the ball effectively.
“Like probably didn't do the work in terms of fitness and stuff as Virat, but still as effective. Would probably hit the ball further,” he added.
Looking Ahead to IPL 2025
With his Test career behind him, Rohit Sharma is now turning his attention to the Indian Premier League 2025, where he will captain the Mumbai Indians. The team is set to face the Delhi Capitals on May 21 in a pivotal match for playoff contention.
This upcoming game holds special significance for Rohit, as it will be his first appearance at the Wankhede Stadium since a stand was named in his honor. It will also mark his debut match following his retirement from Test cricket.
Currently, the Mumbai Indians are positioned fourth in the standings with 7 wins and 5 losses from 12 matches, while the Delhi Capitals trail closely with 6 wins and 5 losses. A loss for DC in this match would mean elimination from IPL 2025, whereas a victory would require them to win their final game and hope for a Mumbai loss in their last match.
