Rishabh Pant's Fitness Uncertainty Ahead of New Zealand Test Series
Rishabh Pant's Participation in Test Series at Risk
The participation of Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batter for Team India, in the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand is now uncertain. This follows his failure to pass fitness tests conducted at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on November 1.
The Test series is set to commence on November 19, with the first match taking place at Basin Reserve in Wellington, followed by the second match at Hagley Oval in Christchurch starting November 27. Team India recently secured a 3-2 victory in the T20I series and will begin the ODI segment of the tour on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland.
Despite the two-week gap before the first Test, the management of Team India remains hopeful about Pant's availability, as he will have another opportunity to demonstrate his fitness prior to the team's departure.
Initial Fitness Assessment Results
Rishabh Pant has been in rehabilitation at the BCCI CoE in Bengaluru after suffering a side strain while leading the Rest of India team against Jammu and Kashmir during the Irani Cup final in early October.
He has reportedly resumed batting and wicketkeeping drills as part of his recovery process. However, the 28-year-old faced an initial setback by not meeting the physical benchmarks established by the BCCI medical staff during his first evaluation.
Although Pant did not experience any pain during his recovery, the medical team opted for caution to prevent a premature return. He is scheduled for another fitness test on November 9, just ten days before the first Test against New Zealand.
Impact on Upcoming Matches
Due to his side strain and subsequent rehabilitation, Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the first two unofficial Tests between India A and New Zealand A. Consequently, he is also unlikely to participate in the final unofficial Test against New Zealand A in Lincoln on November 7.
Additionally, Pant missed four Ranji Trophy matches for Delhi this season following his injury during the Irani Cup final.
Gautam Gambhir's Comments on Pant's Fitness
After India's T20I series victory over New Zealand, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of Team India, was questioned about Rishabh Pant's fitness and availability for the Test series.
Gambhir stated that he had no updates regarding Pant's condition, promising to share information as soon as it became available.
Future Prospects for Pant's Return
Rishabh Pant's role is vital for India's Test team, and his absence could significantly impact the team's performance in challenging overseas conditions. Following his initial fitness assessment failure, Pant will undergo a second evaluation on November 9 to determine if he can travel.
His fitness tests will include a match-simulation assessment, where he must complete a high-intensity 50-over session to mimic match conditions. Given Pant's importance in Tests, the BCCI medical staff is unlikely to take risks without full clinical and match-simulation clearance.
Currently, Pant has reported no pain during his recovery and has resumed light cricket training at the BCCI CoE. His return to competitive cricket hinges on the outcome of the match-simulation test on November 9. If successful, he is expected to travel directly to New Zealand to join the Indian squad in Wellington ahead of the first Test.
