Rishabh Pant Calls for Team Accountability After LSG's Super Over Defeat
Match Overview
In a thrilling encounter during the IPL 2026 season, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced a narrow defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday, marking the first Super Over of the season. LSG, chasing a target of 156, fell just short, finishing at 155 runs after Mohammed Shami hit a six on the last ball of the innings.
Super Over Drama
During the Super Over, LSG struggled significantly, losing two wickets for just one run. KKR's Sunil Narine played a crucial role, dismissing both Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram. KKR needed only two runs to win and achieved this on the very first ball, thanks to Rinku Singh's boundary.
'We Need to Take Accountability': Pant
After the match, LSG captain Rishabh Pant emphasized the necessity for the team to embrace collective accountability. He mentioned that the squad requires a brief respite to regroup and manage pressure more effectively. Pant highlighted the importance of internal solutions rather than looking externally for answers.
"I think we definitely need a break. There is always pressure, and it's gonna be a pressure game always, but at the same time, we have to look for answers inside, not outside. And just keep it simple. We need to take accountability - every guy. Like, it can't be about one or two guys. It has to be about the whole unit, and a lot of people will take accountability for that for sure," Pant stated.
Backing Pooran in the Super Over
Despite Nicholas Pooran's struggles in IPL 2026, where his highest score in seven matches was only 22 runs, Pant revealed that the team decided to support him in the Super Over. He expressed trust in Pooran's abilities during high-pressure moments.
"We discussed as a group, we had a discussion, and the name that came up was Nicholas Pooran. He might not go through the best form of his life, but at the same time, you will trust your player in a hard situation like this," Pant explained.
Looking Ahead
Rishabh Pant acknowledged that there were no excuses for the defeat and noted the current lack of positives. However, he remains optimistic that the team will return stronger after their break. "No excuses there. Just looking at the positive, there might not be enough positive right now, but I think after the break, there will be a lot of enough positive for sure," he added.
Match Details
In the match, KKR managed to post a total of 155/7, recovering from a precarious position of 93/7, largely due to Rinku's impressive unbeaten 83 runs off 51 balls. Despite a stellar performance from Mohsin Khan, who took 5 wickets for 23 runs, KKR secured a competitive score.
In response, LSG faced early setbacks, losing Mitchell Marsh for just 2 runs. Rishabh Pant (42) and Aiden Markram (31) attempted to stabilize the innings, but their slow scoring added pressure. Key dismissals in the middle overs, including those of Pant and Markram, left LSG struggling. Late contributions from Ayush Badoni (24) and Himmat Singh (19) kept their hopes alive, culminating in Shami's last-ball six that forced the Super Over. Ultimately, LSG could only manage one run in the Super Over, leading to KKR's swift victory.
Current Standings
Following this match, KKR is now positioned eighth with five points from eight matches, while LSG has dropped to the bottom of the IPL 2026 standings.
