Rio Ferdinand Criticizes Jorge Jesus for Treatment of Cristiano Ronaldo
Ferdinand's Strong Words Against Jesus
Rio Ferdinand, a former star for England and Manchester United, has publicly criticized Portugal's head coach Jorge Jesus for his treatment of Cristiano Ronaldo. Ferdinand insists that Jesus should seek forgiveness for his actions.
Ronaldo, who plays for Al Nassr, departed the national team camp prematurely following a communication breakdown during the UEFA Nations League. Questions have arisen regarding Jesus's role, especially since he was part of the coaching staff that helped Al Nassr secure trophies alongside Ronaldo.
The Bench Controversy
Tensions escalated during Portugal's match against Norway. Before the game, Ronaldo was told to warm up, indicating he would play in the second half. However, Jesus ultimately chose not to field him, leaving Ronaldo visibly frustrated on the sidelines. While Jesus cited tactical reasons for this decision, it only intensified the existing rift between him and Ronaldo.
Ferdinand Calls for Respect and an Apology
Ferdinand, who played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United from 2003 to 2009, defended the football icon on his podcast, stating, "Cristiano Ronaldo was placed in a very unfavorable situation and treated poorly. His legacy in football is immense. Jorge Jesus has not managed Ronaldo effectively and has opted for a disrespectful approach, which is inexplicable. This manager seems to believe he is on par with legends like Alex Ferguson or Pep Guardiola."
"I cannot understand why he considers himself among the elite coaches. He should have shown Ronaldo the respect he rightfully deserves," Ferdinand continued.
He emphasized that the discord between Ronaldo and Jesus stems from inadequate management and a failure to assign the superstar a fitting role, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty reminiscent of past issues within the team's locker room during significant tournaments.
"The coach needs to apologize... or he risks losing his job. He must acknowledge, 'I misjudged this situation,'" he added.
Ronaldo's Future in the Team
Despite ongoing discussions about Ronaldo's age and his place in contemporary football, Ferdinand believes the legendary player still has much to contribute. The challenge lies in balancing Ronaldo's ego with the team's requirements.
"I think he still has a role to play. The key question is whether that will be as a starter, a crucial substitute in certain matches, or a mix of both. This needs to be addressed, and it will come down to respecting the agreements made. Coaches are not only paid to manage a team but also to manage individuals," Ferdinand concluded.
