Ricky Ponting Advocates for India's Best XI Against Zimbabwe in T20 World Cup
Focus on Best XI Over Matchups
Ricky Ponting, the former Australian cricket legend, emphasizes that the Indian cricket team should prioritize fielding their strongest lineup rather than concentrating on specific matchups. As India prepares to face Zimbabwe in their upcoming Super Eight match at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, Ponting shared his insights during a recent episode of The ICC Review.
He noted, "From what I've heard in commentary, Axar Patel's absence against South Africa was attributed to the left-handed batsmen in the opposing team. However, there were still right-handers present. It ultimately relies on the captain's skill to utilize Axar effectively at the right moments."
India's Suryakumar Yadav-led squad suffered a significant defeat against South Africa, losing by 76 runs in their first Super Eight match in Ahmedabad. They are set to take on Zimbabwe in Chennai on Thursday, followed by a concluding match against the West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday.
Ponting further stated, "Returning to the fundamentals is crucial. I would assess their lineup and determine our optimal XI for the Chennai conditions. If Axar Patel fits into that, fantastic. If Kuldeep Yadav is the better option, he should be considered as well, as he can bowl effectively against both left and right-handed batsmen."
Ravi Shastri Supports Axar Patel's Inclusion
Ravi Shastri, a former Indian cricketer and current commentator, echoed Ponting's sentiments, asserting that quality spinners have significantly influenced the T20 World Cup, particularly in matches held in India. He believes that India should make adjustments to their playing XI, potentially reintroducing Axar Patel for the match against Zimbabwe.
Shastri remarked, "It's essential to bring Axar back into the fold. His experience is invaluable." He suggested, "I would advocate for playing both Axar Patel and Washington Sundar to provide an additional bowling option. On any given day, one bowler may underperform, as seen with Varun Chakravarthy last Sunday, who struggled and faced the consequences."
He added, "If Axar Patel plays, he could bat at No. 8. With Hardik Pandya at No. 5, Shivam Dube at No. 6, and Washington Sundar at No. 7, Axar could also slot in at No. 5 if needed. If eight batsmen can't deliver in T20 cricket, then something is amiss, especially with such firepower. Not utilizing an extra bowler is a missed opportunity. Rinku Singh may need to sit out, but if he comes in, it should be at the expense of a specialist batter."
