Real Madrid Welcomes Back Key Players Ahead of Atletico Madrid Clash
Major Player Returns for Real Madrid
Real Madrid has received a significant boost as they gear up for their La Liga match against Atletico Madrid on March 22 (Sunday). Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe are both set to return to the squad, as confirmed by head coach Alvaro Arbeloa during a press conference on Saturday. This news comes as Madrid prepares for a vital derby at the Santiago Bernabeu, with both players coming back from injury.
Bellingham has been out for seven weeks due to a hamstring injury, while Mbappe recently made his comeback from a knee issue, appearing as a substitute in Madrid’s Champions League victory over Manchester City earlier this week. Arbeloa stated, “He is available now; he’ll be in the squad tomorrow.” He expressed optimism about Bellingham’s potential participation, saying, “I think he will. He’s available, and I’m really looking forward to seeing him on the pitch.”
The absence of Bellingham had allowed 18-year-old midfielder Thiago Pitarch to gain more playing time recently. Arbeloa noted that the young talent could still play a role even with Bellingham's return, saying, “Having Bellingham back is excellent. The fact that Thiago has managed to perform at this level is also excellent news. It’s a blessed problem to have to choose between these two players. They can play together too.”
Mbappe is also expected to contribute after recovering from his knee injury, which kept him sidelined for nearly a month. He has been called up for the national team for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Colombia. Arbeloa remarked, “I told you, the day he returns is because he’s 100 per cent.” He praised Mbappe’s performance in Manchester, highlighting his bursts of speed and overall fitness.
This season, the French forward has been impressive, netting 38 goals in 34 matches across all competitions, making him the top scorer for Madrid. However, despite these positive updates, the team will miss goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is expected to be out for several weeks due to a thigh injury. Arbeloa expressed confidence in Andriy Lunin, stating, “The best goalkeeper in history gets injured, and we have another outstanding goalkeeper who will once again show how good he is.” He emphasized his “utmost confidence” in the Ukrainian keeper.
Currently sitting second in the La Liga standings, Real Madrid aims to leverage the return of these key players as they face Atletico in the derby.
