Ravichandran Ashwin Suggests Pay Cut for Cameron Green if Bowling Performance Lags in IPL 2026
Concerns Surrounding Cameron Green's Performance
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches, former cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his views regarding Cameron Green, the Australian all-rounder recently acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a hefty sum of Rs 25.20 crores. Ashwin believes that if Green fails to fulfill his bowling duties by not delivering his four overs, KKR should consider reducing his salary by two crores.
Green is set to be a key player for KKR as they kick off their season against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on March 29 in Mumbai. However, his recent form raises concerns, as he has struggled to perform consistently in the months leading up to the tournament.
Recent Performance Highlights
In the T20 World Cup, Green managed only 24 runs across three innings, with a top score of 21. His bowling was limited to just three overs in two matches, where he took one wicket. Additionally, during a recent Sheffield Shield match for Western Australia against New South Wales (NSW), despite scoring a century, he did not bowl at all.
Prior to the World Cup, in the T20 series against Pakistan, Green bowled four overs in two games, claiming just one wicket. His performance in the 2025/26 Ashes was similarly disappointing, taking only four wickets in 61.5 overs across five matches, averaging 70.75. With such limited bowling experience, Green enters the IPL with significant pressure.
Ashwin's Proposal on Salary Deductions
In a discussion on his YouTube channel, Ashwin raised questions about whether Cricket Australia would permit Green to bowl all four overs. He suggested that if Green is restricted in his bowling, IPL teams should have the right to adjust player salaries accordingly. "If he bowls only two overs, then they should deduct 2 crores. Why not?" Ashwin argued, emphasizing that players should meet the expectations set during the auction.
He illustrated his point by asking how franchise owners, like Shah Rukh Khan, would feel if they paid a player 25 crores only for him to underperform. Ashwin's comments highlight the financial stakes involved in the IPL and the expectations placed on high-profile players.
