Ravichandran Ashwin shares his journey in the IPL, highlighting the pivotal role of his mentor VB Chandrasekhar. He reflects on his early days, a standout performance that led to his selection for CSK, and the supportive environment that contributed to the team's success. Ashwin's Early Days in IPL

Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian off-spinner, has shared insights into his initial experiences in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He attributes his rise to prominence to a remarkable performance in Chennai league cricket and the support of his late mentor, VB Chandrasekhar, which ultimately led to his selection for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

The Influence of VB Chandrasekhar

During an episode of JioStar's 'The Ravichandran Ashwin Experience', Ashwin expressed his gratitude towards those who have influenced his career, particularly highlighting Chandrasekhar's role in recognizing his talent at a time when finger spinners were often overlooked in T20 cricket. "I have always aimed to remain thankful. People enter your life, help you progress, and then move on; for me, that person was VB Chandrasekhar," Ashwin reminisced. He recalled playing for Chemplast against MRF at Pachaiyappa's ground when T20 cricket was still in its infancy, and spinners were deemed less effective.

A Defining Moment

Ashwin recounted a pivotal moment during a league final at Chepauk, where he delivered a standout performance that caught the attention of CSK's management. "CSK had already acquired Muttiah Muralitharan, and I thought my chances were over. However, during the final, I took six wickets. After being named Player of the Match, Kris Srikkanth remarked, 'What, CSK didn't pick you? Hey Kasi, take him,'" he recalled.

Support from His Mentor

Following this impressive display, Ashwin received a call from Chandrasekhar the next day, who encouraged him to continue honing his skills. "He told me, 'I've been observing you for five years... you'll learn a lot. Absorb as much as you can—you have the potential to go far, and your attitude is commendable,'" Ashwin shared.

A Successful Tenure with CSK

Ashwin's IPL career commenced with CSK in 2008, where he quickly became a vital component of the team's success. He played a significant role in the franchise's victories, contributing to their IPL titles in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Champions League T20 wins in 2010 and 2014.

Return to CSK

In 2025, Ashwin made a return to CSK for a fee of Rs 9.75 crore, marking a significant homecoming to the franchise that helped establish his career. During the intervening years, he played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, gaining valuable experience across various IPL teams before returning to Chennai.

CSK's Winning Formula

Ashwin credited the strong team culture and exceptional management at CSK as crucial factors behind their sustained success from 2010 to 2015. He emphasized that the balanced squad and supportive environment allowed players to concentrate solely on cricket without external pressures. He also acknowledged the contributions of domestic players like Murali Vijay, Subramaniam Badrinath, and Shadab Jakati, who adapted well to their roles within the team. "Chennai was one of the early teams with not just talented batsmen but also quality bowlers. Several domestic players, including myself, Murali Vijay, Badrinath, and Shadab Jakati, played pivotal roles for CSK," Ashwin noted.

A Dream Left Unfulfilled

As he concluded his IPL journey with CSK, Ashwin reflected, "When I got the opportunity to play for CSK again, my first thought was to finish where I began. I had hoped to play for 2-3 more years, but that didn't happen. However, I did finish where it all started. I had a small dream to end my career at Chepauk, which I couldn't fulfill." He added, "My last IPL match was in Delhi, but playing at Chepauk would have been even more special, as my last ODI was also there. That ground holds many memories for me."
