Ravichandran Ashwin Joins San Francisco Unicorns for Major League Cricket
Ashwin Thrilled About US Cricket Opportunities
Former Indian cricket star Ravichandran Ashwin has officially joined the San Francisco Unicorns, a franchise in the Major League Cricket (MLC), for the upcoming season of this T20 league based in the USA, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Ashwin Eager for the Upcoming Tournament
At 39 years old, Ashwin shared his enthusiasm for the tournament, which is scheduled to commence on June 19. He remarked, "The reception from the Asian community during the game highlighted the immense potential of cricket in America. It's truly exciting," as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Having retired from international cricket in December 2024, this will mark Ashwin's first participation in a T20 league outside of the Indian Premier League. He had previously signed with the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League for the 2025-26 season but had to withdraw due to a knee injury.
Inspired by Growing Interest in Cricket
Ashwin noted the increasing enthusiasm for cricket among young people and the broader community in the United States, particularly among expatriates. He expressed a desire to experience the atmosphere firsthand when the team arrives for Major League Cricket. "The level of interest from children and many who have settled in America is remarkable, and I want to see what it feels like when we arrive for the MLC," Ashwin stated.
MLC Executive Praises Ashwin's Signing
Johnny Grave, the chief executive of MLC, emphasized that securing Ravichandran Ashwin for his first significant franchise league outside India showcases the growth of Major League Cricket since its inception in 2023. He commented, "This will be Ashwin's debut in a major global franchise competition beyond India. Attracting a player of his caliber is a testament to the league's development over the past three years since its launch in 2023."
