He emphasizes the importance of management support and fitness strategies to keep them in the game. Support for Veteran Players

Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his endorsement for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to participate in the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup. He believes that their experience could significantly bolster India's chances, even as both players approach the latter stages of their careers.

Upcoming World Cup Details

The World Cup is set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia during October and November 2027. At that time, Kohli will be nearly 39 years old, while Rohit will be over 40. Ashwin argues that age should not be a deterrent if both players maintain their fitness and receive adequate support from the management.

Importance of Management Support

"From my perspective, if the management is keen on having both players in the World Cup, and if there’s a positive atmosphere, it’s entirely feasible to keep them fit and utilize their expertise," Ashwin stated during a segment on ESPNcricinfo.

He emphasized that a strategic approach to fitness and backing from selectors and management is essential for extending the ODI careers of these seasoned players.

Rehabilitation and Team Dynamics

"I’m not a medical expert, but if there’s a solid rehabilitation program tailored to their needs, and if the team environment is supportive, they can succeed," he added.

Ashwin noted that any doubts cast upon the players could hinder their performance, especially as they age and face increased injury risks.

Collaboration Between Players and Management

He likened the relationship between players and management to a partnership, stressing the need for collaboration to ensure Kohli and Rohit are available for the World Cup.

"It’s a mutual effort. Positive energy from both sides is crucial for them to reach the 2027 World Cup," Ashwin remarked.

Current Performance and Fitness Levels

Kohli and Rohit have shifted their focus solely to ODIs after retiring from T20 Internationals in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025. Kohli has been in remarkable form since 2025, amassing 891 runs at an average of 68.53, including four centuries and five fifties. Rohit has also been effective, scoring 711 runs at an average of 44.43, with two centuries and four half-centuries.

India is scheduled to play 20 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup, starting with a three-match series against Afghanistan. Kohli will miss this series due to a hamstring injury, while Rohit has returned to the squad after recovering from a similar injury that kept him out for five matches during IPL 2026.

Maximizing Experience

"Rohit has yet to win a 50-over World Cup, and I believe he is eager to showcase his skills in 2027 and secure another title for himself and the nation," Ashwin noted.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of leveraging the experience of senior players like Kohli and Rohit, especially in challenging overseas conditions.
