Rassie van der Dussen Announces Retirement

New Delhi: Rassie van der Dussen, the South African cricketer, has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of a remarkable career as one of the nation's most reliable white-ball players.

The 35-year-old shared his decision via social media, expressing heartfelt gratitude for his time with the Proteas.

In his statement, he said, “With a proud heart and immense gratitude, I announce my retirement from international cricket. Wearing the Proteas jersey requires resilience and dedication, and it has been the greatest honor of my life. This journey has involved years of sacrifice, but representing South Africa has been worth every moment.”

Van der Dussen made his international debut at 29 in a T20I against Zimbabwe, following a successful domestic and global T20 career. His consistent performances in domestic cricket, particularly in South Africa's first-class competitions, paved the way for his selection to the national team.

While he played 18 Tests since his debut against England in 2019, van der Dussen truly shone in ODIs. He played a crucial role in South Africa's 2019 World Cup campaign and became a key figure in the middle order. His ODI statistics are impressive, with 2,657 runs in 71 matches at an average exceeding 50, making him the second-highest run-scorer among South Africans, just behind AB de Villiers.

Reflecting on his journey, van der Dussen expressed gratitude to Cricket South Africa, Enoch Nkwe, and all the coaches and managers who supported him throughout the years.

He also thanked his wife and the South African fans, reminiscing about unforgettable moments like batting at the Wanderers Stadium. “To my wife, Lara, you have been my rock through every high and low, and I couldn’t have achieved this without your unwavering support.”

He continued, “To the people of South Africa and the fans, thank you. The feeling of hearing ‘MaThousand’ in the streets or walking out to bat at a packed Wanderers Stadium is indescribable, and those memories will stay with me forever.”

In total, he concludes his international career with 905 runs from 18 Tests (including six fifties), 2,657 runs from 71 ODIs (with six centuries and 17 fifties), and 1,406 runs from 57 T20Is (featuring ten fifties). Although he is stepping back from international play, van der Dussen confirmed his intention to continue participating in domestic cricket and nurturing the future of the sport.

He expressed his gratitude to teammates, coaches, mentors, and friends, stating, “Cricket has given me everything, and I owe it my life. My advice to young players is to dream big and give everything to achieve those dreams. I have never considered myself more special or talented than anyone else. My journey should prove that you can achieve your dreams, no matter what they are.”

Van der Dussen concluded, “While my time with the Proteas has ended, my journey continues. I will keep playing for my beloved Lions and am committed to giving back to the game by mentoring the next generation of South African cricketers. I love South Africa and cricket. Thank you for everything.”
