Rafael Fiziev Discusses Future Fights and Recent Controversies in UFC
Fiziev's Insights Ahead of Fight with Manuel Torres
UFC Lightweight contender Rafael Fiziev has shared his thoughts on several hot topics in the UFC as he prepares for his upcoming bout against Manuel Torres. Among the subjects discussed were the recent incident involving Dustin Poirier at the airport, the possibility of a rematch with Justin Gaethje, and a potential fight with Conor McGregor. Despite their exciting previous match, Fiziev does not foresee a rematch with Gaethje occurring soon. He revealed that Gaethje suggested they should only meet again when a title is at stake.
Fiziev on the Gaethje Rematch
Justin Gaethje recently secured the undisputed championship with a remarkable victory over Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250, held at the White House. Gaethje, who had faced setbacks in two previous title fights, emerged as the underdog but ultimately claimed the title. Fiziev commented, "Honestly, I don't think about a rematch, and I don't believe it's going to happen right now. After our fight, he told me, 'Bro, no more fights unless it's for the belt.' Currently, I am a bit far from that position and not the number one contender."
Fiziev on a Possible McGregor Matchup
The 32-year-old fighter also addressed the idea of facing former two-division champion Conor McGregor. He expressed willingness to take the opportunity if it arises, although he currently views the fight as unlikely due to McGregor's immense popularity. "I don't think I will ever fight him. Conor is a massive superstar; he is the face of MMA and the UFC. I don't think I am on his level—and by that, I mean his level of hype, not skills," Fiziev explained.
Fiziev Comments on Poirier Incident
Fiziev also weighed in on the recent airport incident involving Dustin Poirier, expressing appreciation for the Polish security personnel's calm response. He took this moment to reflect on the challenges fighters face after retirement, noting that many struggle to find new purposes outside of their fighting careers. "I watched that video of Dustin Poirier a couple of hours ago. First of all, I want to say a huge thank you to those Polish security officers because they were very gentle with him. They could have hurt him, damaged him, or tackled him badly, because causing a scene at an airport is very dangerous. I’m really grateful they handled him with care," he said.
Fiziev emphasized the difficulties fighters encounter post-retirement, stating, "When a professional fighter finishes their career, it is incredibly hard. When you do one thing your entire life—fighting and training—and then suddenly you retire, you don't know what to do next. You have to find something else to enjoy just as much as fighting, and that transition is tough." He also made a strong statement regarding alcohol, labeling it as a significant societal issue. "Alcohol is the number one worst thing in this world. So many terrible situations stem from it. People kill, steal and commit terrible crimes because of alcohol. It breaks people's lives and destroys the world. It is complete bullshit. Do not drink alcohol," Fiziev asserted.
As for his upcoming fight, Fiziev is eager to secure a victory against Manuel Torres, aiming to accumulate wins and move closer to bigger matchups in the future. Fans in India can catch his fight on Sony Sports Network.
