Racism Incident Shakes Indian Super League Match
Racism in Indian Football: A Disturbing Incident
Racism made its presence felt in Indian football during a recent Indian Super League match at Kanteerava Stadium, where fans reportedly directed racist chants at players from Kerala Blasters. A video that went viral showed a supporter yelling “go to zoo” at a Kerala Blasters player, prompting widespread outrage on social media and raising alarms about player safety and discrimination within the sport.
In response to the incident, Kerala Blasters issued a statement on their social media platforms, expressing their dismay over the “appalling incident” that occurred during the match. The club condemned the racist behavior and confirmed that they have reported the matter to the relevant authorities, including the ISL and AIFF, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding their players' integrity.
“Racism has no place in our sport,” the club asserted.
In light of the incident, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) released a statement acknowledging the complaints regarding the alleged racist behavior during the ongoing Indian Super League season. The AIFF expressed its unwavering support for players and affirmed that everyone should be able to enjoy the game without facing discrimination. They reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on racism and indicated that the complaints have been forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee for further investigation, adhering to the AIFF Disciplinary Code. The federation will not comment further while the inquiry is in progress, emphasizing that those who promote hatred in stadiums are unwelcome in the sport.
