R Vaishali Reflects on Critical Mistake in Women's Candidates 2026
Vaishali's Admission of Error
During her match against Chinese Grandmaster Zhu Jiner in the Women’s Candidates 2026 on Sunday, Indian chess player R Vaishali acknowledged a significant mistake. After the game, Vaishali openly admitted that she faltered under the pressure of time constraints. “It was an engaging match. I believe I mismanaged my strategy when time was running low,” she stated.
Vaishali, who initially held a one-point lead, faced a setback in the 12th round, where she played with white pieces and ultimately lost to Jiner, who has now equalized at the top of the leaderboard. Jiner emphasized the importance of taking risks to secure victories, saying, “I felt it was essential to aim for a win today. A draw would have made it extremely challenging to clinch the tournament title. I had to take more chances in this match.”
As the tournament progresses, Vaishali will need to regroup after the final rest day, which will be crucial in determining the challenger to the reigning world champion, Wenjun Ju of China. In addition to facing Zhongyi, Vaishali will also encounter a tough challenge from Russia's Kateryna Lagno, who, despite being out of title contention, remains a strong competitor.
Upcoming Pairings for Round 13: Women: Bibisara Assaubayeva (Kaz, 6.5) vs Anna Muzychuk (Ukr, 6.5); Kateryna Lagno (Rus, 5.5) vs Divya Deshmukh (Ind, 5); Tan Zhongyi (Chn, 5) vs R Vaishali (Ind, 7); Zhu Jiner (Chn 7) vs Aleksandra Goryachkina (Rus, 5.5).
