Quang Duong Joins APP Tour: A Strategic Move in Professional Pickleball

Quang Duong, a leading figure in Asian pickleball, has signed a multi-year deal with the APP Tour, sparking discussions in the pickleball community. This strategic move follows his previous contract termination with the UPA-A and aims to provide him with greater flexibility in a competitive landscape. With plans to participate in multiple tournaments, including the Pickleball D-Joy Tour in Malaysia, Duong's decision reflects a shift towards a more open playing field in professional pickleball, contrasting with the restrictive policies of the PPA Tour. Discover the implications of this signing for Duong and the future of pickleball.

Quang Duong's Surprising Transition to APP Tour

In an unexpected turn of events, Quang Duong, a prominent figure in Asian pickleball, signed a contract with the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) on March 4. This decision has ignited discussions within the pickleball community. Duong's previous contract with the United Pickleball Association of America (UPA-A) was terminated in July 2025 due to his participation in an unauthorized event in Vietnam. Following this, he competed in various tournaments outside the PPA, including the inaugural Indian Pickleball League (IPBL), where he showcased his exceptional skills and led the Mumbai Smashers to victory.

His recent multi-year agreement with the APP has raised eyebrows, especially after he was seen conversing with PPA Tour founder Connor Pardoe during the PPA Masters semifinal matches in January. Accompanied by his father, Duc, this meeting sparked speculation about a potential return to the PPA Tour. However, Duong's decision to join the APP has left many puzzled.

The APP Tour is currently in a fierce competition with the PPA Tour for dominance in the professional pickleball arena. By signing Duong, who has a growing international fanbase, the APP Tour enhances its lineup and boosts its event appeal.

Strategic Decision

While this deal is significant for the APP Tour, Duong's choice appears to be a well-thought-out one. His father and manager, Duc, elaborated on the rationale behind the agreement, emphasizing the importance of keeping options open in a rapidly evolving sport with multiple competing tours. Unlike previous contracts, Duong's agreement with the APP does not bind him exclusively, allowing him to participate in other circuits, particularly as professional pickleball continues to expand in Asia.

Duc mentioned that this flexibility enables Duong to assess where the best competitive and business opportunities lie. He refrained from commenting on the numerous other signings made by the APP this week, noting that each player's contract may differ.

Details of Duong's Contract

Although the APP has not disclosed specific details of Duong's contract, Duc indicated that it mandates Duong to compete in four events in 2026 while permitting him to participate in other tournaments. This arrangement keeps the door open for his return to the IPBL.

Duong has already confirmed his involvement in four tournaments on the Pickleball D-Joy Tour 2026 in Malaysia. The flexibility offered by the APP could signify a new trend in the pickleball landscape, encouraging players to compete globally rather than being restricted to a single tour. This approach contrasts with the Professional Pickleball Association's current policy, which does not allow its players to compete elsewhere, leaving Duong's potential return to the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball uncertain for 2026.
