PWL's Impact on Wrestling

The recent success of the Professional Wrestling League (PWL) continues to resonate internationally, as numerous Indian and foreign wrestlers from the blockbuster Season 5 have showcased remarkable performances in significant global competitions.

Taking place at the Noida Indoor Stadium in January, PWL Season 5 featured elite wrestlers alongside both established and emerging Indian talents, solidifying its status as a leading competitive platform in the country. The league's influence is evident in the achievements of various grapplers who have thrived in international tournaments, highlighting the necessity of a robust domestic competition framework.

Indian Wrestlers Shine After PWL

Sujeet Kalkal has emerged as a standout competitor, currently ranked World No. 2 in the men's 65kg category, just behind Iran's reigning world champion and Olympic silver medallist Rahman Amouzad. Representing Delhi Dangal Warriors in PWL Season 5, Sujeet finished as the runner-up after winning six out of seven matches. Following the league, he has secured three consecutive international gold medals, triumphing at the Ranking Series events in Zagreb and Muhamet Malo, and clinching the Asian Championship title in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, earlier this month.

In the women's 53kg category, Meenakshi Goyat has also made significant strides. Competing for Punjab Royals, she won all her matches in the league and carried that momentum into the national trials, defeating Antim Panghal to earn her spot on the Indian team. Meenakshi has since won silver medals at both the Muhamet Malo tournament and the Asian Championships in Bishkek, enhancing her international reputation.

Other notable performances include Olympic silver medallist Aman Sehrawat (men's 61kg) from the Tigers of Mumbai Dangals, who secured silver medals in both Zagreb and Bishkek, and Dinesh Dhankhad (men's 125kg) from Punjab Royals, who earned bronze in both events. Neha Sangwan of Haryana Thunders also shone with a silver medal at Muhamet Malo and a bronze in Bishkek.

Rising star Abhimanyu, competing in the men's 70kg category, delivered an impressive performance. The 24-year-old CISF constable, who represented UP Dominators in the league, won gold in Bishkek by defeating Mongolian legend Tomor-Ochiryn Tulga, a former Asian Games champion and two-time world medallist.

International Wrestlers Benefit from PWL

The league's impact extends to international competitors as well. Canadian world medallist Karla Godinez Gonzalez, who participated with Delhi Dangal Warriors, earned a silver medal in Zagreb. Meanwhile, Japanese wrestling icon Yui Susaki, part of the title-winning Haryana Thunders team, added another Asian title to her impressive career in Bishkek.

Promising Future for Indian Wrestling

With the Asian Games and World Championships approaching later this year, the achievements of PWL Season 5 wrestlers, especially from India, bode well for the nation's prospects on both continental and global platforms. The ongoing success of athletes emerging from PWL Season 5 further emphasizes the league's crucial role in enhancing India's wrestling ecosystem and providing a premier platform for elite competition.
