In a commanding performance on Thursday, the two-time Olympic medalist triumphed over Japan's Riko Gunji with a score of 21-9, 21-12 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Gunji, currently ranked 19th in the BWF Women's World Rankings, faced a tough challenge against Sindhu, who is ranked 11th.

From the very start, Sindhu took control of the match. Utilizing her height and reach, she executed powerful smashes that left her younger opponent struggling. Sindhu quickly established an 18-9 lead in the first game, with Gunji primarily on the defensive, unable to match Sindhu's pace and strategic shot placement. Sindhu wrapped up the first game comfortably at 21-9.

The second game mirrored the first, with Gunji attempting to extend rallies to tire Sindhu out. However, the Indian star maintained her composure and focus. After gaining a 12-8 lead midway through, Sindhu continued to apply pressure, forcing Gunji into mistakes and clinching the game 21-12.
