Punjab Kings' Strong Start in IPL 2026

The Punjab Kings, last year's finalists, have maintained an unbeaten streak in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) season, largely due to the effective leadership of Shreyas Iyer. Since joining the team, Iyer has demonstrated remarkable performance, aiming to surpass last season's near victory. Known affectionately as 'Sarpanch' by fans, he has accumulated 203 runs across four innings this season, boasting an impressive average of 67.67 and a strike rate of 187.96, including 14 sixes and an equal number of fours.

Iyer Discusses His 'Sarpanch' Title

In a recent interview on JioStar's 'Believe', Iyer shared his thoughts on the 'Sarpanch' title he has embraced since joining the Punjab Kings. "I cherish it. Initially, I was unaware of the significance of the 'Sarpanch' label and how it originated. However, after discussing it with some teammates, I learned that it signifies the leader of a family, group, or district. This understanding marked the beginning of my journey with the team," he explained.

Current Standings of Punjab Kings

As the only unbeaten team in IPL 2026, Punjab Kings lead the points table with nine points from five matches. Their match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ended in a washout, resulting in one point awarded to each team. KKR currently sits at the bottom of the table, having lost five out of six matches. Additionally, uncapped Indian player Prabhsimran Singh has been in exceptional form, scoring 211 runs this season with an average exceeding 70 and a strike rate of 172, including 22 fours and 11 sixes.
