Prayagraj Rallies Behind Team India for T20 World Cup Semifinal
Prayagraj's Support for Team India
Residents of Prayagraj gathered to pray for India's success in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinals against England, scheduled at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Enthusiastic supporters engaged in devotional chants and offered prayers to various deities, particularly Lord Shiva, showcasing their patriotic spirit. They recited mantras like 'Om Namah Shivay,' hoping for a victory for the Men in Blue in the crucial match.
Local Confidence in Team India
Ankit Kumar, a local supporter, shared his optimism about Team India's chances, reminiscing about past triumphs over England, including Yuvraj Singh's iconic six sixes. He confidently predicted that India would not only win the semifinal but also triumph over New Zealand in the final. 'We have prayed for Team India's win. We have defeated England before. Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes in six balls. We will win the semi-finals and reach the finals and then also defeat New Zealand in the finals,' he stated.
India's Journey to the Semifinals
Despite a setback against South Africa, where they lost by 76 runs in their opening Super 8s match, India has performed well overall, securing six victories out of seven T20 World Cup matches. However, the team has yet to deliver a flawless performance with all aspects of the game—batting, bowling, and fielding—working in harmony.
Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India faced a challenging situation after the loss to South Africa. They needed a win against the West Indies, which they achieved thanks to Sanju Samson's impressive 97*, leading to a five-wicket victory that secured their place in the semifinals.
England's Performance
England, captained by Harry Brook, has also had a strong showing, winning six out of their seven matches in the T20 World Cup 2026 and currently riding a five-match winning streak. Their only defeat came against the West Indies during the group stage.
T20 World Cup Head-to-Head Record
In terms of their T20 World Cup history, India holds a 3-2 advantage over England. The first encounter in the inaugural tournament saw India winning by 18 runs, highlighted by Yuvraj Singh's remarkable six sixes in an over.
In their subsequent meeting, England's Ryan Sidebottom and Graeme Swann restricted India to just three runs short of 154 in the 2009 edition.
During the 2012 tournament, Rohit Sharma's half-century (55) helped India post 170/4, while Harbhajan Singh's four wickets led to England being bowled out for 80, resulting in a 90-run victory for India in Colombo.
Ten years later, England, led by Jos Buttler (80*) and Alex Hales (86*), successfully chased down 169 runs without losing a wicket in just 16 overs to reach the finals.
Two years after that, Rohit Sharma (57) and Suryakumar Yadav (47) helped India to a total of 171/7, which they defended effectively, with Axar Patel's impressive bowling (3/23) leading to England's collapse for 103 in the semifinal at Providence.
