Poymantee Baisya Shines with Silver at WTT Contender Lagos 2025
Historic Achievement for Indian Table Tennis
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], August 1: Poymantee Baisya has made a remarkable mark on the international table tennis scene by clinching a silver medal in the mixed doubles category at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos 2025, partnering with Akash Pal.
The event took place from July 22 to 26 in Lagos, Nigeria.
Baisya and Pal, who were the top seeds, created history by becoming just the second Indian mixed doubles duo to reach the finals of a WTT Contender tournament. They showcased their skills by winning their initial matches convincingly, securing straight-game victories in both the opening round and the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, they triumphed over Italy's John Oyebode and Gaia Monfardini with a score of 3-1, but faced a setback in the final, losing 1-3 to France's Jules Rolland and Prithika Pavade.
"This is a significant moment for both Akash and me. We have thoroughly enjoyed our game, and it feels truly special to be among the few Indian pairs to reach the finals of a WTT Contender event," Baisya expressed.
Sanjay Adesara, Chief Business Officer of Adani Sportsline, which has signed Baisya under their 'Garv Hai' initiative, congratulated her on this achievement, stating, "Congratulations to Poymantee and Akash for this remarkable accomplishment. It is a proud moment for India and for all of us at Adani Sportsline."
