Portugal's World Cup Schedule Unveiled

Washington [US], December 6: Portugal is set to commence its FIFA World Cup 2026 journey on June 17, facing the victor of Intercontinental Playoff 1, which includes teams from Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Congo.


Following this match, Portugal will take on Uzbekistan, a team making its World Cup debut, on June 23. The group stage will conclude for Portugal with a match against Colombia on June 27.


Portugal has been placed in Group K for the tournament.


The FIFA World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 11, with the opening match featuring co-hosts Mexico and Canada in Mexico City.


Portugal's coach, Roberto Martinez, expressed confidence in the competitive spirit of Colombia, noting their adaptability and the presence of players from top European clubs. He acknowledged Uzbekistan as a lesser-known team but praised their coach, Fabio Cannavaro, emphasizing the competitiveness of the group. Martinez highlighted the importance of rest for players who have had long seasons.


The group stage draw took place during a spectacular ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. This edition of the World Cup will introduce a new format, featuring 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four.


The draw event was graced by sports legends, including England and Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand, who hosted the ceremony, alongside icons like Shaquille O'Neal, Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, and Aaron Judge.


The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will progress to the round of 32.
