Political Controversy Erupts Over Shahrukh Khan's IPL Player Choice
Political Backlash Against Shahrukh Khan
During a public event in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, BJP leader Sangeet Som launched a fierce critique against actor and co-owner of IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, Shahrukh Khan.
In the IPL auction held in December, KKR acquired Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. Som labeled Khan as a 'traitor' for this decision, expressing that it was inappropriate to invest millions in a player from a country where reports of atrocities against Hindus are emerging and anti-India slogans are being raised. He even warned that if Mustafizur comes to India, the situation would not be favorable for him.
Som's remarks have intensified the controversy, drawing reactions not only from BJP leaders but also from various religious and political figures. Spiritual leaders Devkinandan Thakur and Jagadguru Swami Rambhadracharya have also criticized Khan's decision with strong comments.
The political discourse surrounding this issue has become heated. Anand Dubey, a leader from Shiv Sena (UBT), stated that if Shahrukh Khan removes Mustafizur from the team, he would be respected, but if he profits from playing with the player, that money could be used for anti-India activities, which would be unacceptable.
Conversely, several Congress leaders have rallied in support of Shahrukh Khan. Congress MP Manickam Tagore criticized the RSS, asserting that labeling a superstar as a traitor is an attack on India's pluralistic ethos, and that nationalism cannot be defined by hatred. Congress leader Tariq Anwar also mentioned that foreign players are allowed to play under the cricket board and international regulations, making personal accusations inappropriate.
Muslim religious and social organizations have also expressed their objections to the statements made. Maulana Sajid Rashidi, president of the Imam Association, remarked that any mention of a Muslim name often triggers unwarranted opposition, which goes against constitutional values. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, clarified that Indian Muslims also raise their voices against the atrocities faced by minorities in Bangladesh, and linking a cricket contract to treason is misguided.
AIMIM national spokesperson Waris Pathan condemned the violence and questioned why there is selective outrage regarding cricketers when matches between countries like India and Pakistan are permitted.
According to reports, Pyare Khan, chairman of the Maharashtra State Minority Commission, has urged Shahrukh Khan to reconsider his decision regarding Mustafizur in light of the controversy. This entire situation has transcended sports and evolved into a political debate, with further reactions expected in the coming days.
