PM Modi Launches 72nd National Volleyball Tournament, Emphasizes India's Sports Aspirations
Inauguration of the National Volleyball Tournament
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament in Varanasi through video conferencing, emphasizing India's growing ambitions in sports. He highlighted the nation's preparations for hosting international events and its bids for the Olympics.
During his address to players, officials, and dignitaries, Modi expressed his pride in the tournament being held in his parliamentary constituency, welcoming teams from all over the country. With participants from 28 states, the event exemplified the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.' He congratulated the athletes for their dedication in reaching this national level.
Modi pointed out India's aspirations to host significant global sporting events, stating, 'India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and we are actively pursuing the 2036 Olympics.' He noted that such initiatives would create more opportunities for athletes, reflecting the growing global confidence in India's capabilities, as evidenced by hosting over 20 major international events in the last decade.
Drawing a connection between volleyball and nation-building, he remarked, 'Volleyball teaches us that victories are never achieved in isolation. Our success relies on teamwork, trust, and readiness.'
He stressed the importance of collective effort, stating, 'Each individual has a role to play; our success is contingent on everyone fulfilling their responsibilities. Our nation is progressing in the same manner.'
Modi took pride in India's enhanced global performance since 2014, particularly highlighting the achievements of Gen Z athletes who have proudly represented the nation. He reflected on the previous neglect of sports by both society and government, which led to uncertainty among athletes. However, he noted that the last decade has seen significant changes, including increased budgets, athlete-focused policies, talent identification, scientific training, nutrition, and transparent selection processes.
He placed sports within the framework of the government's Reform Express, referencing the National Sports Governance Act and the Khelo Bharat Policy 2025, which aim to enhance transparency and allow young athletes to balance their sports and education.
Modi also acknowledged Varanasi's rich sporting heritage in disciplines such as wrestling, boxing, boat racing, and kabaddi, along with institutions like Banaras Hindu University, UP College, and Kashi Vidyapeeth that have produced national-level athletes. He expressed confidence that the city's enthusiasm would contribute to a memorable event.
New sports facilities and complexes in and around Varanasi are set to support athletes from neighboring districts. The Sigra Stadium, the tournament venue, has been upgraded with modern amenities suitable for major national events.
He encouraged players to strive for excellence, hoping that every spike, block, and point would contribute to realizing India's dreams. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was present at the event alongside other dignitaries.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from January 4 to January 11, featuring over 1,000 players across 58 teams from various states and institutions, further establishing Varanasi as a significant sporting hub.
