Pickleball's Growing Influence in Charity Fundraising

The surge in pickleball's popularity across the United States is transcending its roots in professional play and casual clubs, now making significant inroads into celebrity charity events and fundraising efforts. The upcoming 5th Annual Charity Golf & Pickleball Tournament, hosted by Global Lyme Alliance, is set to unite former NFL and MLB athletes for a day of fundraising at the Greenwich Country Club on June 8, 2026.

As reported by GLA.org, this event will feature a blend of championship golf and pickleball matches, culminating in a Champions Award Dinner and a charity auction in the evening. Notable sports figures expected to attend include former NFL stars Michael Strahan, Victor Cruz, and Dante Hall, alongside MLB legends Johnny Damon, Tino Martinez, and Jim Leyritz. Other former athletes such as Shawn Chacón, Dhani Jones, Josh Booty, Jeff Nelson, and Ron Darling are also on the guest list.

Proceeds from this event will aid research, awareness campaigns, and support initiatives for Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Global Lyme Alliance has successfully connected over 43,000 patients with specialists through its support services. Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is typically transmitted via bites from infected black-legged ticks, commonly known as deer ticks. If not treated, it can result in severe long-term neurological, muscular, and health issues.

The inclusion of pickleball in this charity event underscores the sport's growing cultural significance in the U.S. Once primarily seen as a community pastime, pickleball is now increasingly featured in celebrity sporting events, corporate competitions, and fundraising activities, thanks to its accessibility and social nature. Its lower physical demands compared to traditional racket sports make it appealing for retired professional athletes looking for competitive yet less strenuous activities. As pickleball continues to gain traction commercially across North America, its rising presence in celebrity and charity events signifies its steady integration into mainstream American sports culture.
