Pickleball Sees Unprecedented Growth in the U.S. with Over 24 Million Players
Explosive Growth of Pickleball in the United States
In 2025, pickleball participation in the United States surged dramatically, with over 24 million individuals engaging in the sport, as reported by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA). The 2026 Topline Participation Report indicated that 24.3 million Americans played pickleball last year, reflecting a remarkable 22.8% increase from 2024. This data reveals that participation in pickleball has skyrocketed by 171.8% over the past three years, solidifying its status as the fastest-growing sport in the nation. The SFIA characterized pickleball as the 'dominant multi-year growth leader across all tracked sports,' emphasizing its transition from a niche pastime to a widely recognized sport across the U.S.
New Players Fueling the Sport's Expansion
The report highlighted that a significant portion of pickleball's growth stemmed from casual players trying the sport for the first time. Casual participation, defined as individuals playing between one and seven times a year, reached 16.8 million in 2025, marking a 23.9% increase from the previous year. Concurrently, the number of core players—those who play at least eight times annually—also saw an uptick. In 2025, 7.48 million Americans were categorized as core players, representing a 20.4% rise from 2024. This distinction between casual and core players is crucial, as casual players often introduce newcomers to the sport, while core players typically drive organized leagues, tournaments, and regular court usage.
Pickleball's Impact on Racquet Sports
The SFIA report also noted a broader increase in racquet sports participation in the U.S. Over the past decade, participation in these sports has steadily climbed, reaching 20.6% of Americans in 2025, up from 13% in 2019. Seven out of eight racquet sports tracked by the association experienced year-on-year growth, with pickleball being the primary catalyst for this expansion. For context, tennis had 27.3 million players in 2025, reflecting a 6.2% year-on-year increase, while table tennis recorded 15.9 million participants, growing by 0.7% during the same timeframe. Pickleball, however, added nearly 4.5 million players in just one year.
Increasing Physical Activity Levels in the U.S.
The report also pointed to a significant shift towards greater physical activity among Americans. According to SFIA data, 80.5% of individuals aged six and older—approximately 250 million people—participated in at least one sport or fitness activity in 2025, the highest level recorded since tracking began. Meanwhile, inactivity rates fell to 19.5%, the lowest since data collection commenced.
Future Prospects for Pickleball
The findings indicate that pickleball's growth trajectory is far from reaching its peak. Industry experts attribute the sport's ongoing expansion to several factors, including its accessibility, strong social aspects, and the rapid development of new playing facilities. Pickleball is often viewed as easy to learn and more affordable than many other sports, appealing to a diverse range of age groups and skill levels. The doubles format also fosters social interaction, contributing to the formation of vibrant local communities. Additionally, thousands of new courts have been built across the U.S. in recent years, accommodating the increasing demand for playing spaces. With over 24 million players already engaged and millions more exploring the sport annually, the SFIA report suggests that pickleball is still in the midst of its growth phase rather than nearing its saturation point.
