Pickleball Gains Popularity in China: Hebi's Transformation into a Sports Hub
Hebi's Pickleball Revolution
Pickleball is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity across China, particularly in Hebi, where the sport is being integrated into various sectors such as education, community activities, tourism, and even manufacturing. According to a report, pickleball has transformed from a little-known pastime to one of the most rapidly growing recreational activities in the city.
The sport now draws participants of all ages, including retirees, students, office workers, and casual athletes, in parks, schools, and community centers. A retired teacher, Zhang Xiuying, shared her journey with pickleball, stating that it has become an essential part of her daily life since she discovered it a few years ago. She remarked, “Before, my leisure was just watching TV or taking walks. Now, if I don't play a few rallies every day, something feels missing.” Zhang has transitioned from a novice player to a dedicated participant and volunteer coach, introducing her neighbors to the game.
Hebi's pickleball activities are now a daily affair, with mornings primarily occupied by seniors engaging in fitness and socializing on community courts. In the afternoons, younger players and students receive coaching, while evenings attract professionals looking to relax after work. Since 2023, Hebi has actively promoted pickleball across various sectors, engaging over one million participants through initiatives in schools, communities, and commercial areas.
To facilitate this growth, the city has constructed over 1,500 courts and numerous public fitness facilities, ensuring easy access for residents. Additionally, Hebi has developed a competitive framework with coaching programs, referee training, and organized tournaments, involving more than 380 coaches and referees. The city has seen increased participation in competitions, especially after hosting the 2025 National Pickleball Championships, which attracted 25 teams and over 300 athletes, generating significant tourism revenue.
Hebi is also positioning itself as a manufacturing center in China's burgeoning pickleball economy. Companies like Henan Geili Sports are leveraging local expertise in rubber and plastics to produce pickleball paddles and balls for international markets, including the United States and Canada. As pickleball continues to expand globally, Hebi exemplifies how the sport's growth is influencing economic, tourism, and community development strategies.
