Pickleball Gains Popularity in Belgium with New Community Initiative
Introduction of Pickleball in Belgium
In Belgium, pickleball is steadily becoming more popular, thanks to a new initiative aimed at broadening its appeal through community sessions in Lasne. The non-profit organization Pick’L Club, established by Mathieu Clairet, Alexandre Giuliani, and Sydney Mahy, is set to conduct introductory sessions this Saturday at Renipont Plage. The founders expressed their frustration with traditional sports environments, stating, “We were fed up with closed clubs, musty-smelling locker rooms, and sports where you have to know how to play to have fun!”
The initiative aims to promote pickleball, a racket sport that merges aspects of tennis, padel, and table tennis, emphasizing accessibility and enjoyment. Mathieu noted, “Alex is an exceptional tennis player, a former Belgian prospect. I sometimes play against him, but the skill gap can make it challenging to enjoy.” He highlighted that pickleball offers a more enjoyable experience, as it is rapidly gaining traction globally, boasting the highest growth rate in player numbers last year.
While the sport is already popular in regions like the United States and is expanding in South America, Asia, France, and Spain, it is just beginning to take off in Belgium. Currently, there are limited facilities, often found in padel centers or sports complexes, but the founders are eager to enhance its accessibility.
They emphasized that pickleball is easy to learn and does not require advanced skills. “You don’t need to be Roger Federer to start playing. It’s accessible, recreational, and friendly,” they stated. The upcoming sessions will provide newcomers with a chance to experience the sport as it continues to grow in Belgium.
Understanding Pickleball's Popularity
Pickleball uniquely combines elements from tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, captivating players worldwide. Its swift rise in popularity raises questions about its appeal. The sport offers a blend of physical, social, and mental engagement while being low-impact, making it suitable for all ages. The smaller court size and underhand serve facilitate quick learning and enjoyment. Additionally, pickleball fosters a strong sense of community among players.
