Philippines Embraces Pickleball as a National Sport
Growth of Pickleball in the Philippines
In the Philippines, pickleball is experiencing rapid growth, transitioning from a casual pastime to a more organized sport, thanks to the efforts of the Philippine Pickleball Federation (PPF). This organization is recognized by both the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee, and it is a founding member of the Global Pickleball Federation. The PPF has implemented essential systems to foster the sport's development, including the Philippine Pickleball Participant (PPP) Registry, which serves as a national database for players, coaches, and officials, along with an Official National Ranking System set to launch on January 1, 2026.
Shery Anne Cu, the president of the PPF, expressed, “We have witnessed remarkable organic growth in pickleball over the past few years, which is something to celebrate. However, it is now crucial to support this enthusiasm with systems that promote fairness, credibility, and sustainable development.” The federation is also focused on creating standardized pathways for tournaments, officiating, and coaching to ensure consistency at all levels of play.
At the grassroots level, Skechers has been instrumental in promoting the sport's growth. The brand has sponsored various events, including the Street Pickleball exhibition at the GPF Global Pickleball Congress in November 2025 and the inaugural Philippine Pickleball National Championship, which took place from May 30 to June 1, 2025. Additionally, Skechers has signed players like Sarah Jane Lim-Narvasa and Leander Lazaro as official pickleball athletes.
Looking forward, the first Skechers Pickleball 1st Philippine Pickleball Amateur Nationals is set to occur from March 28 to March 30 at the Tela Park Pickleball Centre in Las Piñas City. This event will contribute to the official national rankings and is anticipated to gather amateur players from all over the country under standardized competitive conditions. Sue Pasustento, Country Manager of Skechers Philippines, stated, “The Nationals represent a pivotal moment for pickleball in our country. It’s inspiring to witness Filipinos stepping onto the court and becoming part of a more connected community with Skechers supporting every step.” The upcoming Nationals are seen as a significant milestone in the federation’s long-term development strategy, highlighting the sport's expanding structure and influence throughout the Philippines.
