Paris Police Seek Cancellation of Diamond League Amid Heat Wave
Diamond League Meeting in Paris Under Threat
Authorities in Paris have requested the cancellation of this weekend's Diamond League athletics event due to an unprecedented heat wave affecting the region. The police prefecture highlighted that the extreme temperatures, which have persisted since June 21, necessitate a focus on emergency services to protect vulnerable populations. They have urged the event organizers, along with other scheduled activities such as a music festival and a Pride march, to cancel their plans. If the organizers do not comply voluntarily, the prefecture indicated it would enforce the cancellation.
Prominent athletes like Noah Lyles, Femke Bol, and Mondo Duplantis were anticipated to participate in the Paris event. However, the French track and field federation stated that they had not yet received any formal cancellation order. Previously, organizers expressed their intention to hold the meet in a modified format, emphasizing that the safety of all involved—athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, and spectators—is their top priority. They plan to allow only elite athletes to compete, adhering to safety regulations while still aiming to conduct the event.
According to Meteo France, the average temperature recorded at 30 weather stations reached 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday, matching the previous day's record for the hottest day in France. For the first time, over three-quarters of the country has been placed under a red weather alert.
