California, June 20: In a thrilling encounter, Paraguay managed to secure a narrow 1-0 victory against Turkey, thanks to Matias Galarza's record-setting goal and a solid defensive performance, despite being reduced to ten men. This win keeps Paraguay's hopes alive for the FIFA World Cup 2026 while eliminating Turkey from the tournament.
After suffering a 4-1 defeat to the United States in their opening match of Group D, Paraguay started strong with Galarza scoring just 64 seconds into the game. His powerful low shot from 25 meters not only found the back of the net but also set a new record for the fastest goal in the tournament, surpassing the previous record of 71 seconds held by Morocco's Ismael Saibari against Scotland earlier that day.
For much of the first half, Paraguay appeared to be in control. However, they faced a significant challenge when Miguel Almiron received a straight red card during first-half stoppage time. This marked a historic moment as Almiron became the first player to be penalized under FIFA's new disciplinary rule for covering his mouth during a confrontation with Turkey's Mert Muldur. Following a VAR review, the decision stood, leaving Paraguay to navigate the second half with only ten players.
This new rule was introduced prior to the tournament, mandating a red card for players who cover their mouths during disputes. FIFA implemented this regulation after an incident involving Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni, who was accused of making discriminatory comments towards Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior while obscuring his mouth.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Paraguay showcased remarkable defensive resilience in the second half. Turkey dominated possession and launched several attacks in search of an equalizer, but Paraguay's defense remained steadfast, preserving their slim lead.
This victory represents a remarkable turnaround for Paraguay following their heavy initial loss, earning them their first points in the tournament. Conversely, Turkey's defeat, following their own opening match loss, extinguished their chances of progressing from Group D. As the group stage nears its conclusion, Paraguay remains in contention for advancement.
