Expansion of Pickleball in Paraguay

Pickleball is gaining popularity in South America, particularly in Paraguay, where free beginner classes are being introduced to promote the sport nationwide. The Asunción Pickleball Club (APC) is spearheading this initiative, offering complimentary sessions throughout June at the newly established Club Dink, located in the Barrail Costanera Complex in Asunción.

Individuals of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate, with all necessary equipment provided at no cost. The sport made its debut in Paraguay through small groups of tennis and padel enthusiasts but has seen significant growth over the past 18 months, thanks to the opening of new courts and the formation of organized structures.

A notable achievement for the sport was the formation of Paraguay's inaugural national pickleball team, which has already competed in World Championships held in Peru and the United States. Dave Peery, the Vice President of the APC, emphasized the importance of accessibility in their mission.

“We invite everyone to come and experience pickleball, viewing it not merely as a niche sport but as an engaging, social, and enjoyable activity from the very start,” Peery stated. He highlighted that the launch of Club Dink represents a significant advancement for pickleball in Paraguay.

“For the first time, Paraguay has a dedicated social club for pickleball, marking a pivotal moment for the sport's development in the country,” Peery noted. The facility boasts five professional-grade courts and serves as the APC's headquarters.

Iro Villar, president of the APC, shared that the project aims for sustainable long-term growth. “This club was established with the vision of fostering a space where pickleball can thrive in Paraguay. We aspire to create a gathering place for players of all ages and skill levels, positioning the country within the regional pickleball circuit,” Villar explained.

He also mentioned that investing in quality infrastructure was a strategic choice. “We prioritized top-tier facilities because we believe that an excellent playing experience is crucial for attracting new players and enabling Paraguay to host significant competitions in the future,” Villar added.

Looking forward, APC officials are optimistic about Paraguay becoming a key destination on the regional pickleball calendar. “We aim to establish ourselves as a premier pickleball venue in the region. Our high-quality facilities will help Paraguay strategically position itself,” Peery concluded. Club leaders have already started forging connections with federations and associations in neighboring countries to enhance Paraguay's presence in the expanding international pickleball community.
