Odisha's Hockey Glory at Khelo India Tribal Games
Raipur: Odisha wrapped up an outstanding performance by clinching gold medals in both men's and women's hockey at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, hosted at the Vallabhbhai Patel International Hockey Stadium. The men's final concluded with Odisha triumphing over Jharkhand with a score of 4-1, while the women's match was fiercely contested, resulting in a narrow 1-0 victory against Mizoram. Jharkhand's men's team secured the silver medal, with Chhattisgarh taking home the bronze, and in the women's category, Jharkhand also earned a well-deserved bronze medal.
The success of Odisha's hockey teams at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 signifies more than just athletic achievement; it highlights the transformative power of sports in tribal communities across Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. The northeastern states, known for their rich sporting talent, also made their mark, with Mizoram advancing to the knockout stages of the tournament. Odisha's men's team showcased their dominance with a decisive 4-1 win over Jharkhand, while the women's team secured a tense 1-0 victory against Mizoram. The podium finishes for Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh further emphasize the rising talent in these regions.
However, the narrative extends beyond mere medals, reaching into the villages and communities where hockey has become a vital part of identity and opportunity. For decades, hockey has been ingrained in tribal culture, with children crafting sticks from branches and playing barefoot on uneven terrain. Although the talent has always existed, the pathway to success was often unclear. This is now beginning to change.
With the establishment of Centres of Excellence by the Union sports ministry and state governments, along with improved infrastructure and organized grassroots initiatives, a robust ecosystem is gradually taking shape. Ajit Lakra, a former Olympian from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and current head coach at the Bilaspur Centre of Excellence, witnesses this evolution firsthand. He remarked, “The entire system, from grassroots to junior and senior levels, is steadily strengthening. Athletes from tribal backgrounds are particularly benefiting. Their innate talent is being honed with proper training and guidance.” Lakra believes this structured support is creating a positive ripple effect. “When children come here, learn, and excel, they inspire others. This creates a chain reaction, continuously bringing forth new players,” he added.
Regions that have faced socio-economic challenges and issues related to Naxalism are now witnessing a gradual transformation through sports. Hockey is emerging as a unifying force, weaving communities into the national narrative. The sports ministry’s ASMITA program is increasingly engaging women athletes, helping them integrate into the mainstream.
Odisha's dual victory in Raipur symbolizes a larger movement where villages are becoming centers of excellence, and hockey is igniting the dreams of a new generation. From the dusty fields of Bastar to the vibrant stadiums of Raipur, the journeys of these athletes are reshaping Indian hockey and influencing the social landscape of tribal India.
