Novak Djokovic Contemplates Retirement Ahead of French Open 2025
Djokovic Hints at Retirement
Novak Djokovic, the renowned Serbian tennis player and former world number one, has suggested that he is considering retirement as he prepares for his first-round match against MacKenzie McDonald from the USA at the French Open 2025 on May 27.
Among the 'Big 4' of tennis, Djokovic remains the only active competitor on the ATP Tour. Roger Federer was the first to retire, concluding his career after participating in the 2022 Laver Cup. Following him, Andy Murray announced his retirement after competing in the Paris Olympics last year. Rafael Nadal officially retired in November 2024 after Spain's loss in the Davis Cup.
A Historic Reunion at Roland Garros
Almost a year after Nadal's retirement, the four legendary players who dominated men's tennis for two decades, collectively winning 69 Grand Slam titles, came together at Roland Garros to commemorate the end of an era, marking a significant moment in tennis history.
Djokovic Reflects on His Future
In a pre-match interview, Djokovic shared that attending Nadal's farewell event prompted him to contemplate his own retirement. He mentioned discussions with Federer and Murray about their respective retirements and the rivalries they shared.
"Honestly, I was thinking about my end of the road as well when we were watching Rafa having his speech, particularly those moments when we were in the back room, the three of us, and I was talking to Federer and Murray about their good-byes and reminiscing and reflecting on the rivalries," Djokovic stated.
Djokovic's Impressive Form
The emotional backstage encounter with his long-time rivals left a lasting impact on Djokovic, especially as he witnessed another peer saying goodbye to the sport. While Federer, Nadal, and Murray faced retirement due to injuries and fitness issues, Djokovic, at 38, continues to maintain good physical condition.
Recently, he achieved a milestone by winning his 100th ATP title at the Geneva Open, becoming only the third player in men's singles history to reach this landmark, following in the footsteps of Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer.
Chasing a Historic 25th Grand Slam Title
Currently, Djokovic is targeting his 25th Grand Slam title at the ongoing French Open, which would set a new record. He is currently tied with Margaret Court, who also has 24 Grand Slam titles, after his victory at the 2023 US Open.
In 2024, Djokovic did not secure any Grand Slam titles for the first time since 2007. He missed the opportunity to claim his 25th title after withdrawing from the semifinal against Alexander Zverev due to a knee injury. Prior to the French Open, he parted ways with his coach Andy Murray following early exits at the Monte Carlo Masters and Madrid Open.
As he competes in the French Open 2025, Djokovic is determined to leave no stone unturned in his quest for a historic 25th Grand Slam title, further solidifying his legacy as one of tennis's greatest players.
