Exciting Summer Opportunity for Kids

Parents looking for engaging summer activities for their children can now consider a new option at Redstone Arsenal. Child and Youth Services has announced the opening of registration for a Youth Pickleball League, designed for players aged eight to 17. This recreational program will focus on coaching, skill enhancement, and organized competitions, providing young athletes with a chance to explore one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. during their summer break. Registration is open until Friday, with league play set to commence on June 13 and run through July 29. The cost for participation is $65, which includes a uniform.

Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, has seen a surge in popularity across the nation, thanks to its accessibility and straightforward learning process. Mike Gates, the youth sports director for MWR, mentioned that the league is structured to ensure players compete with others of similar experience. “We primarily base it on age and skill level,” Gates explained. “Participants will be matched with peers who have similar ages and abilities. In pickleball, size and strength are less critical than in many other sports, making age differences less significant.”

Officials believe this format will make the sport approachable for children, regardless of their prior sporting experience. The program aims to teach fundamental skills while allowing participants to enhance their abilities through regular match play in a supportive setting.

For military and civilian families at Redstone Arsenal, convenience is a significant consideration. All activities will be held at Building 3153 on the installation, where facilities have been modified to support the league. “We have established two temporary pickleball courts inside our building at 3153,” Gates noted.

The schedule is designed to fit family and work commitments, with practices and games scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 10 a.m. on Saturdays, allowing children to participate as school holidays begin. The season is anticipated to include around 16 sessions.

Organizers believe the program encourages physical activity outside of competitive settings, especially during a time when many children are spending more time indoors and on electronic devices. The league also provides a chance for participants to forge friendships while cultivating healthy habits through regular exercise.

If skill levels and participation numbers permit, organizers may conclude the season with a tournament. “It really depends on the kids,” Gates stated. “If they are competitive and their skill levels support it, we could host a tournament at the end.”

Registration is available through Parent Central Services at the Pershing Welcome Center on Aerobee Road. Officials encourage interested families to register early, noting that late registrations will be accepted on a space-available basis.

As pickleball gains traction among various age groups, initiatives like the Redstone Arsenal Youth Pickleball League highlight the sport’s growing significance in youth recreation and community sports development.
