Some may argue this is the first significant professional sports championship for New York in over 14 years, considering only the major leagues. However, it’s essential to acknowledge the New York Liberty's WNBA title in 2024 and NYC FC's MLS Cup victory in 2021. Yet, for the teams that have been part of New York's legacy for decades, this championship ends a long wait. The last time the Giants won the Super Bowl was in 2012, while the Yankees last claimed a World Series in 2009. The Knicks, who had a remarkable playoff run, are now the pride of the city.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remarked on the Knicks' incredible comeback in Game 4, stating, “Of course I've never seen anything like it, because it had never happened before. But it's been amazing.”

Knicks Claim Their Third Title

After 80 years since their inception, the Knicks have now joined the ranks of franchises with at least three championships. They are now among teams like Boston, Los Angeles, and Chicago, who have a rich history of success.

Knicks legend Larry Johnson expressed his joy, saying, "The Garden is back. ... It’s back like when we played and made our little run. The city is behind us.” The franchise has seen numerous changes, including 24 different coaches and over 400 players since their last championship. Iconic players like Patrick Ewing and Carmelo Anthony have graced Madison Square Garden but couldn't end the title drought until now.

Former Knicks guard John Starks reflected on the journey, stating, “We didn’t get it done. ... I always say the third time is the charm.” After 27 years, the Knicks faced the Spurs again and emerged victorious.

MSG to Raise a New Banner

The iconic Madison Square Garden will soon add a new championship banner, a symbol of the Knicks' triumph. Coach Mike Brown, who won the title in his first season, acknowledged the significance of the franchise's history and the joy it brings to the city.

Despite past struggles, the Knicks have transformed their fortunes since acquiring Jalen Brunson, now boasting the fifth-best record in the NBA.

Celebrating the Knicks' Victory

As Frank Sinatra famously sang, the Knicks are now at the top. Fans were initially disappointed when the team opted not to hang an NBA Cup championship banner earlier this season, but it seems they were waiting for this moment. The 53-year wait is finally over, marking a significant milestone in the franchise's history.

In 1973, the NBA was a different league with only 17 teams, and the Knicks celebrated their last title in a vastly different environment. This time, the celebration is expected to be much larger.
