New Noise Regulations for Pickleball Players in Singapore
New Guidelines for Pickleball in Singapore
Players engaging in pickleball at the Mountbatten community courts in Singapore will now need to adhere to updated regulations designed to minimize noise and enhance harmony among local residents. This decision follows increasing complaints regarding the loud sounds generated by traditional plastic pickleball equipment in densely populated areas.
Member of Parliament Gho Sze Kee announced these changes via a Facebook update, stating that specific time slots will be designated for the use of foam balls only. From 7 am to 10 am and 7 pm to 9 pm, players are required to use foam balls, while standard balls can be utilized during other hours.
Gho explained that foam balls, made from a high-density material, significantly lower noise levels compared to their plastic counterparts. This initiative is part of a larger effort to address the noise concerns raised by residents. He emphasized the importance of kindness and consideration in shared spaces, given Singapore's close living conditions.
In addition to the ball restrictions, players are encouraged to limit their court time to two hours per group to ensure equitable access for everyone. They are also advised to use noise-reducing gear when possible and to refrain from excessive shouting or cheering during matches.
Authorities will closely monitor the situation and may adjust the rules or timings as necessary. Players who repeatedly engage in disruptive behavior may face restrictions on their ability to reserve community courts. Earlier this year, foam balls were distributed at a local event to promote their use, and many players have welcomed the quieter option, allowing them to enjoy the game without disturbing their neighbors.
