New Initiative Bridges Amateur and Professional Pickleball
Connecting Grassroots and Elite Pickleball
Amateur pickleball enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to feel the excitement of the professional scene through a new initiative that connects grassroots players with elite competition. Major League Pickleball (MLP) and Minor League Pickleball (MiLP) have unveiled the MiLP Regional Showdowns, a series of amateur team contests that will take place alongside select events on the 2026 MLP tour.
This initiative aims to immerse amateur players in a professional atmosphere while providing a clear pathway to higher levels of competition. By hosting amateur tournaments at MLP tour events, participants will compete in front of large audiences and within the vibrant environment typical of professional matches.
The Regional Showdowns will utilize MiLP’s established team format, allowing players to compete in four-person coed teams (two men and two women) or in MiLP’s three-player gendered team format known as MiLP v3.
Waseem Mansoor, MLP’s Director of Team Business & Operations, emphasized that this initiative focuses on community engagement, creating a framework where aspiring players, local markets, and professional teams can thrive together. “This partnership is about community first - creating a structure where aspiring players, local markets, and professional teams all operate within the same system,” Mansoor stated.
The Showdowns are scheduled to occur at seven MLP tour stops in 2026, providing amateur players with numerous chances to participate across the United States. The planned locations and dates are:
- Dallas, Texas - May 22–25
- Columbus, Ohio - May 28–31
- Austin, Texas - June 11–14
- New York - June 25–28
- Newport Beach, California - July 16–19
- Chicago, Illinois - July 23–26
- San Diego, California - August 13–16
Players of all ages and skill levels can participate, with divisions organized based on DUPR ratings. Teams may enter independently or under the umbrella of an affiliated MiLP team.
In addition to the thrill of competing at major venues, the tournaments will offer significant competitive incentives. Division winners will receive a “Dream Ticket,” which guarantees their entry into The Dink Minor League Pickleball Championships scheduled for early 2027.
Each match will contribute to the MiLP National Leaderboard, and since the Regional Showdowns are classified as marquee events, participants will earn double leaderboard points based on their team’s performance.
Cesar Clemente, VP of Revenue at Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR), remarked that this partnership marks a crucial advancement in the development of pickleball. “Minor League Pickleball is building the base and Major League Pickleball is building the spotlight,” he noted, adding, “When you connect a true grassroots pathway with a real pro stage, you don’t just grow a sport - you build a system.”
