Indian Athletes Shine in Gumi
On June 1, Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra expressed his appreciation for the Indian athletes who showcased their skills at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea. The Indian contingent amassed a total of 24 medals, securing the second position overall, just behind China.
Among the 24 medals, India claimed eight gold, ten silver, and six bronze. China led the medal tally with 26 medals, which included 15 gold, eight silver, and three bronze.
Chopra took to X to share his excitement, stating, “Thrilled to witness the growth and determination of Indian Athletics! Onwards and upwards from here, Jai Hind.”
The spotlight on the final day of the championships was on the men’s javelin throw, where Sachin Yadav made a remarkable international debut, achieving a personal best of 85.16m to secure the silver medal, finishing behind Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, who threw 86.40m.
Additionally, Animesh Kujur triumphed in the men’s 200m, overcoming a false start by a Chinese competitor to clinch a medal. He set a new personal record of 20.32 seconds, surpassing his previous national record of 20.40 seconds established in Kochi earlier this year.
The Indian team comprising Srabani Nanda, SS Sneha, Abhinaya Rajarajan, and Nithya Gandhe secured silver in the women’s 4x100m relay, finishing in 43.86 seconds, while China took gold and Thailand earned bronze.
Distance runner Parul Chaudhary added another silver to her achievements, having previously won silver in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, now adding a silver in the 5,000m event.
Middle-distance runner Pooja also contributed to the medal tally with a bronze in the 800m, complementing her earlier silver in the 1500m. Vithya Ramraj secured bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles with a time of 56.46 seconds.
Unfortunately, Jyothi Yarraji and Nithya Gandhe were unable to secure medals in the women’s 200m event.
