Neeraj Chopra, India's celebrated javelin thrower, has successfully qualified for the Men's Javelin Throw Final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 30. He secured his spot by achieving a throw of 79.61 meters, placing him fifth in the qualification round held at Scotstoun Stadium.

Joining Neeraj in the final are fellow Indian athletes Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh, creating a formidable trio for India as they aim for medals. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga emerged as the top qualifier with an impressive throw of 82.84 meters.

Qualification Round Highlights

Neeraj's competitor, Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan, also made it to the final, finishing seventh with a throw of 78.63 meters, just shy of Neeraj's mark.

Neeraj's Journey to the Final

Entering the Glasgow Games, Neeraj was a favorite, having previously won gold at the 2018 Gold Coast edition. His absence from the 2022 Birmingham Games due to injury heightened expectations for his return.

During the qualification, Neeraj faced challenges with the cold weather and headwinds, initially throwing 76.28 meters and placing sixth. However, he rebounded with a crucial 79.61 meters in his second attempt, securing his final spot without needing a third throw.

Tough Conditions for Competitors

The qualification round was marked by difficult conditions, with only four athletes surpassing the 80-meter mark. Notably, Rumesh Tharanga, Anderson Peters from Grenada, Douw Smith from South Africa, and England's Ben East were the only ones to achieve this feat.

Despite the automatic qualification mark being set at 84 meters, the challenging weather meant that the top 12 athletes advanced based on their best throws.

Final Showdown Ahead

Neeraj's qualifying throw of 79.61 meters is significantly below his personal best of 86.47 meters, achieved during the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The final promises to be competitive, with elite throwers like Rumesh Tharanga and Arshad Nadeem expected to raise the stakes.

Rumesh holds a world-leading throw of 92.62 meters, while Arshad set an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters. Neeraj will need to deliver an exceptional performance to reclaim his gold medal.

Indian Trio's Performance

Despite the swirling winds and temperatures around 14°C, all three Indian javelin throwers—Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav, and Yash Vir Singh—qualified for the final.

Neeraj's throw of 79.61 meters was sufficient for qualification, but the final will demand even greater distances, especially with competitors like Rumesh and Arshad capable of exceeding 90 meters.

Looking Forward to the Final

Anderson Peters, a two-time World Champion, also poses a significant threat, having thrown 81.29 meters in qualification. If conditions improve, all four athletes—Peters, Tharanga, Nadeem, and Chopra—could potentially exceed 85 meters in the final.
