Namdhari Sports Academy Triumphs Over South United FC in Durand Cup Debut
Namdhari Sports Academy Secures Opening Victory
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], July 30: In an exciting clash of newcomers at the lush Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK) ground, Namdhari Sports Academy celebrated a successful start in the 134th Durand Cup by defeating Bengaluru's South United FC (SUFC) with two late goals from Bhupinder and Brazilian Cledson Dasilva.
This outcome leaves SUFC with just one point in Group A after completing all their matches in this inaugural Durand Cup campaign. Meanwhile, Namdhari's victory boosts their confidence as they aim for a spot in the knockout stages, as noted in a statement from the Durand Cup.
South United, donning their traditional orange for the first time, showcased a spirited effort but could not change their fortunes significantly.
SUFC's coach Kaja Bhadussa opted for a goalkeeper change, bringing in Sunil Singh for Nishanth, as part of five adjustments made following their previous draw against the Indian Air Force.
Despite Sunil's commendable performance, it ultimately wasn't enough to secure a win.
Under the guidance of coach Harpreet Singh, Namdhari, featuring two foreign players—Cledson in attack and Ghanaian Lamine Moro in defense—demonstrated greater experience and organization, which proved decisive.
Aatma Singh initiated the action with a long-range attempt in the 10th minute, which Sunil expertly deflected over the bar, marking the first of many impressive saves he would make throughout the match. The first half concluded with both teams unable to break the deadlock.
Harpreet made two substitutions at halftime, introducing Dharampreet in attack and Akashdeep in defense, indicating a desire to shift the momentum. Dharampreet's presence notably increased Namdhari's attacking pressure.
As the match progressed, Lotjem was thwarted by Sunil in the 69th minute, while Cledson squandered a couple of opportunities, one of which was again saved by Sunil.
Finally, Bhupinder's relentless runs paid off as he maneuvered into the box and set up Dharampreet. Although Rowan attempted to clear the shot aimed at goal, it fell back to Bhupinder, who capitalized with a powerful strike into the near post, leaving Sunil with no chance.
This goal invigorated Namdhari, prompting them to intensify their efforts. Just six minutes later, Amandeep found Bhupinder on the right, and after a poor clearance from Rowan, the ball landed at Cledson's feet, who made no mistake in scoring from close range.
With this victory, both Emami East Bengal FC and Namdhari now sit on three points, with East Bengal leading on goal difference. The Indian Air Force still has two matches remaining, while SUFC's campaign has concluded.
On Thursday (July 31, 2025), Kolkata will host a significant Group B match in the IndianOil Durand Cup, featuring local favorites Mohun Bagan Super Giant making their debut against Mohammedan Sporting at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) at 7:00 PM IST.
