Avinash Thadani's Remarkable English Channel Swim

On September 3, Mumbai's Avinash Thadani, aged 45, made headlines by successfully swimming solo across the English Channel, a daunting 32-kilometer journey that he completed in 22 hours.

Thadani embarked on his swim from Shakespeare Beach in England on August 24, marking his second attempt after a previous effort in 2023 ended after 10 hours. His determination and resilience led him to return and conquer the challenge.

In preparation for this feat, Thadani trained at the Cricket Club of India pool in Mumbai and braved the chilly waters of Ireland, focusing on building both endurance and acclimatization. The water temperature during August typically ranges from 16 to 18°C, adding to the challenge, as noted in a statement from his media team.

Earlier this year, he also swam across the Palk Strait, which lies between India and Sri Lanka, further enhancing his impressive list of endurance achievements that includes marathons and an Ironman triathlon in Copenhagen, Denmark.

With this latest accomplishment, Thadani joins over 60 Indians who have successfully crossed the Channel, a challenge first completed by Mihir Sen in 1958. The English Channel is renowned as one of the most challenging swims globally, with completion times varying from 7 to 27 hours, as swimmers contend with strong currents, waves, jellyfish, seaweed, and busy shipping lanes.
